Focus Electric priced from $39,995

$1000 less than the Volt and $4700 more than the leaf.
Compared to the Leaf which is rated at 73miles by the EPA, if they achieve 100 miles then I would say its worth it based on styling alone. But then there's the Volt at only a grand more and no range anxiety...

I know the Volt is based on the Cruze, but GM did the right thing by making it a separate model. I think had they simply made a 'Cruze electric', they'd have had a much harder time marketing it because people would see it as an extremely expensive Cruze. Instead I think many people envision the Volt as a semi-premium vehicle + electric/gas hybrid system.

Just what I was thinking.
The Volt isn't really based on the Cruze. They both use the Delta II chassis as a starting point but the Volt is dramatically different.
GM was smart in using Toyota's model of marketing the EV/hybrid as a totally different vehicle. Prius crushes Civic hybrid, Fusion hybrid, Camry hybrid, and just about ever other hybrid version of an existing car in sales.
Buyers of the Volt and Prius are buying more than transportation. They are buying a fashion statement. Same goes for Camaro vs. GTO sales. People buy for than just whats under the hood.

With a charge time of 18-20hrs with a 120V charger I'd have to imagine most customers would opt for the fast charge system.
Good to see the automakers trying to get the technology out there.

I think that's pretty much what will happen. Ten or so years and these cars will be mainstream. Some will be more mild and some will be more extensive but I would bet most cars will be hybrids.

But then there will just be some new scheme to jack up energy prices for electric cars, and introduce a new car that runs off of a different type of fuel, and charge an outrageous amount for that.
I know I could be way off in my assumption of this whole thing being a conspiracy.
Who owns oil companies anyway? And how did they come to be owners?

I can see cars like this catching on in Florida and California for retired people and people with short commutes. Definitely as a second car, though. I can't see paying new car price and having to stay within 30 or 40 miles of your home. Safe to say they need to come down in price a bit though.

The one thing that bothers me about electric cars: you are pretty much locked in to dealer service and repair after the warranty expires. Can you imagine taking a Focus EV or Volt to the local mechanic for repairs?
