Did you guys read this article?

"GM races ahead with plug-in car
Automaker signs deal for battery, may beat Toyota to market"

The company they cut a deal with is "123"

http://detnews.com/apps/pbcs.dll/art...708100342/1148

Lutz said he's heard that Toyota has had problems with its batteries but cautioned against writing off the Japanese carmaker in what's become the industry's version of the space race.

"It very definitely opens a window of opportunity for us," Lutz said of Toyota's potential delay.

...

But the batteries being developed by A123 would use a different chemical makeup that do not carry the risks as those being used by Toyota, said Ric Fulop, A123 co-founder and vice president of business development.

"It's a rare case where the technology that Japan has is a generation behind," Fulop said. "This creates an opportunity for GM."

Very interesting tha A123 would be that far advanced but then again I think the hybrid technology is much further ahead than most automotivie applications can use. It's only a matter of time.
I know there is a secret group on engineers from GM/Chrysler and BMW near Detroit working very hard to be the best in the hybrid game for those brands and I have to say they will probably succede.

I borrowed the Popular Mechanics issue witht he Volt article, May 2007.

It spoke about this. Apparently, A123 uses a different cathode in their battery. That's all.
It is and I quote

"For instance, A123's cathodes are made with a low-impedance nanophosphate material that doesn't heat up as readily as common cobalt-based cathodes."

It is a great article to say the least.

The rumor in Automotive News from a month or so ago stated that the internal cost disadvantage of the two-mode system was in the neighborhood of $10,000. It's not clear to me if that includes development costs, and what volume was used to form that projection.
