For a given displacement of engine, more cylinders generally makes it easier to meet emissions standards. Fuel economy tends to suffer however.

It's not so much emissions as it is fuel economy. Light-truck CAFE standards climb between now and '07, and a 'lade is a half-ton truck so it weighs into GM's average.

No diesel option for the Tahoe is f*ckin' stupid. It's offered with the 4L80E in the G-vans (albeit with reduced power), so the no-package situation with the Allison 1000 is no excuse.

If the hybrid is the new dual-mode technology, I'll be very excited to see how well it works. With the prices I saw at the pump today, this could be a real life-saver for GM.

The v10 was axed for a reason, and not because it couldnt be done. But because of overlap

I've never seen you this worked up before. If it wasn't you who said that it wouldn't be so funny, you usually say something like "I don't believe the lack of a diesel option is a very clever move on GM's part," or something like that...but this time you're just like "this is f'n stupid!" I just thought that was funny...

...sorry...

What else would have a V10 that it would overlap?

Is the 8.1L Vortec Big Block still going to be around then, or did they axe that too.

Maybe the superchaged V8?

GM is working on a new family of "V" engines that is much like the "VX" engine they previewed a couple of years ago. This engine was supposed to debut at Cadillac by mid decade.

If true, this would explain why Caddy didn't go with a V10.
Are you speaking of the 'VX' engine that and multiple (2 maybe) internal cams in the cylinder valley as opposed to the usual 1? I haven't heard anything about that in 3-4 years. I thought I had read somewhere it was scrapped because, you guessed it, money had to be spent somewhere else.

He is most likely talking about the new DOHC V8 that was being worked on. I think it is still on, what Caddy wants Caddy gets. It was supposed to share bore and stroke with the HF engines. It would probably still be a 90° engine and use the new DI, direct injection, and a few other more advanced things the Northstar doesn't have. It could probably be both 3 and 4 valve with Buick getting 3 valves and Caddy getting 4, to be better.

I've always thought of the Avalanche as a truck. I'm just talking about the basic GM SUVs built in Arlington. I'm 99% sure they never used the 8.1L.

Again I'm just talking about the 900s that will be built here in Arlington. Only the short frame SUVS. Sorry I wasn’t specific enough with my first comment.

Both the Yukon XL and the Suburban are available with the Vortec 8100, just as the GMT400 Suburban was available with the 454.

With regards to Josh's comment about "overlap", it's hard to imagine that there's much room for a V10 in a lineup that already potentially includes a LS2 and a supercharged LS2. I wouldn't be entirely shocked to see a truck version of the LS7 as well, since there's always been crossovers between GM's performance and truck operations. Add in the possibility of a N* replacement, and it's clear to see that if GM has a problem with the GMT900, it won't be due to a lack of engine options.
