Corvette should be Chevrolet's top performer. PERIOD!!

I believe that when Buick came out with the 86 & 87 Grand National and Turbo T, they were faster in a straight line than those year's Corvettes. I believe that those turbo buicks were some of the fastest production cars back in the day. Of course the Corvette would have slaughtered the buick on a road course.

Wow........it's amazing how people can read something and then think it said something else.
It must be due to all the C6 talk lately - everyone has C6 on the brain!

As far as the 4th gens and C5's go , the vette gets the nod in the handling dept. But when it comes to dragstrip times and rear wheel horsepower figures between a 4th gen ( predominatly 2001-2002's , and sprinkled throughout the 98-00 cars ) and non-Z06 C5's it is a complete wash . Some of the later LS1 F-bodies were dynoing 315 hp plus at the wheels with a safe average being about 290hp to the wheels . Stock for stock the vettes typically will trap higher , but I would contribute that to less weight . A properly equipped F-body will usually have the qwiker ET ( read:: not a 2.73 auto
) . My friends m6 99 non-WS6 trans am went 12.98@110 off the showroom floor @ 400 miles , another friends 99 A4 TA went 13.30@107 with no mods . A F5 I would bet will have at least equal handling capabilities of a later C5 , and solidly trounce it at the dragstrip

I think it will equal the 13 flat times of the C5 given how underwhelming the new LS2 has been in the C6.

It does concern me that the automotive press can't get a stellar time out of the C6 (12.7 is the best I've seen, which isn't bad but I thought it'd be even quicker). That said this is the automotive press, and since GMHTP got an 11.97 out of a bone stock '04 Z06 I'm still waiting on times from better drivers.
Re: F5 vs. C5?
IMO the F5 Camaro SS should top or at least equal the C5's power (350hp) and the F5 Z28 should come close to C5 Z06 specs in power and handling (at least 400hp and over .90g on the skidpad)
This wouldnt upset the "Vette rule" at all since the C6 Z06 will easily outdo these numbers I'm assuming.

Re: F5 vs. C5?
if we ever get a new "F5" Camaro, it will most likely have a 400HP LS2 V8 as the top engine choice. I'd expect to see a mid level V8 in the mix too, maybe with about as much power as the LS1.
So I bet the LS2 Camaro would run a mid to high 12 second 1/4 mile, while the mid level V8 would run similar to the LS1 Camaro, mid to low 13's.

Corvette had the LT1 in 1992. The '93 Corvette typically did 0-60 a half second quicker than LT1 F-bodies. Corvette also came in industrial strength LT5s that ran even quicker back then as well. Both outran '93 LT1 F-bodies.
1993 Chevrolet Camaro Z28 0-60-5.8 1/4 mile-14.4
1993 Chevrolet Corvette LT1 0-60-5.3 1/4 mile 13.9

As for a future car vs one that almost ended production.........

In Chevrolet showrooms, there is a so called "Vette Rule", and it makes perfect sense.
However, as far as other GM divisions making something quicker than Corvette, it has happened many times over the years (and has been beaten to death here
).

I don't believe so.
The 1987 Buick Grand National
The 1987 Buick GNX
The 1989 Turbo Trans Am
where all faster than the Corvette for the corresponding years.
