Exclusive Chicago Report!

Hi guys. With media pass in hand....I'll give you a first hand report on the Chicago Auto Show. I'm at one of the media kiosks right now.

I only have afew minutes.

SS: Doesn't look much better in person than it does in photos.

Malibu: Looks not as bad in person...but still doesn't look good.

Impala/ MC SS: Actually looks better in person. 17" wheels give them a subtle muscular look.

More later............

Let me first start with the star of the show. None other than the silver coupe Mustang concept. It looks even better in person than the photos. It looks so taut and agressive in the flesh....and just down right SPORTY.

While I was looking at it...two guys came by with GM ID badges. After looking at the Mustang for awhile, one of them said to the other...."I don't want to say this too loudly, but this is going to be my next car.....don't say anything, okay".

My impressions of the Chevy booth.

Colorado
Who styled the Colorado? Would have looked stylish in '96. Unless it's a brilliant piece mechanically...I see it as rebate fodder.

Malibu

Actually...I sort of liked it (Well, I didn't dislike it). Don't get me wrong...it's bland alright. But it's fit and finish seem to be on par with Toyota.

Equinox

Now this is a pretty good looking vehicle...IMO the best looking one at the Chevy display. Give the guy who drew it a promotion, and fire everyone else.

Impala SS

I was sort of expecting more. If you like the Impala...you'll love the SS. 17" wheels give it a nicer look though.

Monte Carlo SS

*See above

The S/C version will have "SUPERCHARGED SS" emblems.

The SS salon was pretty neat. Afew old motors on display, a bunch of neat model cars and a video loop going. Actually I was watching the the video to see if they accidentally got any Z/28's in with the SS's....they didn't.

Aveo

Basic transportation....period.
I'm actually surprised at how fast they got these cars out. At least Cavalier can go up a notch, with Aveo as the bottom feeder.

2008 CAMARO!!!
Just kidding.

The SS concept

I'm not sure how I feel about this car. I can't say that I fell in love with it. The interior was nice, but, it's so big and has such massive wheels. It almost looks like some sort of Panzerwagen manufactured by Krupp.

It's okay I guess....just don't call it Camaro.

Alright, my fingers are getting tired.

thanks for the report. I was surprised at negative on the Colorado--even if you don't like it--don't you think it's a much better then the curent (sic) S-10?

Wait...a sec...what's the Aveo? A rebadged...Kia?
I've never heard of this thing before

The Aveo is the first fruit of the Daewoo deal.

I'm sure the Colorado will have much better utility and function than the S-10. I just always thought S-10's looked neat though.

Muscle Truck Report:
(if you are into that.....)

I have to say that the SRT/10 Ram looks absolutely, brutally ferocious. It looks like it could eat the Lightning prototype in one gulp. The Silverado SS is okay I guess....but it is in no way, shape or form anywhere in the same league as the Ram and L'.

The Trailblazer SS concept looked pretty cool, as did the Tahoe SS.

Random Tidbits:
I actually kinda' liked the Chrysler Crossfire, which really surprised me..I was prepared to dislike it.

Best bang for the buck goes to the Neon SRT/4 turbo. For 19K and some change you'll get a 13 sec. rocket.

Two new Mercury Marauder colors...a silver one and and a blue one.

Did I mention that I really liked pretty much all the Infiniti's? I love the M45. It reminds me of the Impala SS we should have had.

Don't tell anyone......but when no one was looking, I sat in the $675,000.00, ( ) Ferrari Enzo.

GTO

I can see how some may say that this car looks more Holden than GTO, Ok, it does ....but it is very handsome. Who knows what GTO's would look like today, if Pontiac didn't give them a "30 year nap". Maybe like the '99 GTO concept , or Grand Am.

I can tell you one thing for sure ...the new GTO is the most nicely detailed and appointed GM car I've ever seen. Better than Corvette. Better than Caddy.

Good call. The Infiniti M45 is pure 1970s Americana. I never thought I would say it, but this Infiniti looks clean, even spartan. Considering its just a mainstream homemarket Cedric/Gloria with a V8, its still pretty special.

How right you are! I was struck by how American the M45 looks. It makes the Impala look like a Kia. It makes the Taurus look like a a Skoda. And it has a sophisticated chassis with an IRS and a 340hp V8.

I was hoping someone from GM might be checking it out.
