Even Honda isn't immune to the SUV slump!

Honda cuts Odyssey, Pilot output

Even Honda Motor Co. is feeling the pain of consumers' stampede from light trucks to cars.

The Japanese automaker said today that it will reduce production of the Honda Odyssey minivan and Honda Pilot crossover by a combined 10,000 units this year at its Lincoln, Ala., assembly plant. In the first half of 2008, Honda built 158,316 Odysseys and Pilots in Lincoln, down 2.4 percent from the same period of 2007.

"Honda is not immune to the shift in the market," said Honda spokesman David Iida. "We don't want inventories to get too high."
It's interesting to see how quickly this particular automaker adjusts its production for a relatively minor change in sales volume. That's a great example of discipline, and of reacting to the market as soon as there's the first sign of trouble.

Contrast this to the way that certain other automakers wait until double-digit decreases in sales volume occur before making adjustments (and, yeah, that comment includes a certain home-country rival of Honda's).

I never understood that myself either.

I do have to question Honda's Commercials bosting about the Pilot's "amazing" 23MPG highway Since when did that become all that good?

Come back with 30+ minimum.

For a vehicle that size, it is good, but not amazing. The lambdas, highlander, and flex all get 24. So maybe it is class trailing fuel economy.

FWD AWD

Highlander 18/24 17/23
Lambdas 17/24 16/22
Flex 17/24 16/22
Pilot 17/23 16/22

The Highlander hybrid gets 27/25.

Looks like no one is going to touch 30MPG in this segment for awhile

Honda has been advertising the Pilot? I haven't seen any, I figured they were burying it because of the now declasse truck-ish styling.

With good consumer data and dealer feedback mechanisms, its should possible to predict demand ahead of time, before the factories have overloaded inventories.

Am I the only one who sees car commercials???

They have 2 adds for the pilot out right now. One of them where they pick up a boy scout troop and the other one is where is they pick up guys who were in a hot air balloon.
