DoD just a gimmick? Anyone see real results?
Re: DoD just a gimmick? Anyone see real results?
Branden,
I'd be ripping mad too...although, I can't say this Hemi is any better. Around town yesterday on the DIC, average MPG dropped from 20.5 to 18.9 over the course of about 20 miles of in town driving...that means I'd estimate this pig gets 14 or so around town at best...
When you consider my dad's '05 TB LT gets 19 or so with a 60/40 highway/city mix? All these V8 cars seem pretty bad. Why is it a DoD 5.3 A4 car can't seem to match an 8 year old LS1/A4 Camaro? I've heard of guys pulling 19 around town with those cars without much issue...
The fact my 9 year old LT1, with an engine dating back 14 years, pulled almost 27 MPG doing 80-85 the whole way to Bowling Green really puts this in perspective...granted, I have an M6, but I would think a Hemi doing 70 with all this great technology could pull more than an estimated 21-22 doing SEVENTY??
BS...

Re: DoD just a gimmick? Anyone see real results?
We average about 14.9....all city. On my highway trip, I only averaged about 24, but I was travelling at a speed where the DOD can't regularly rely on 4 cyls can maintain, so it was running on 8 alot of the time. On the way back, I slowed it down to 60 for part of the way, and the mileage was several mpg's better, but I didn't get the exact number. on the instant mpg for example though, flat ground will get me about 21 on 8, about 29 on 4.
Re: DoD just a gimmick? Anyone see real results?
I am pretty stunned by how low these MPG numbers are...
Even in my GTO, without DOD, I was averaging 20.1 MPG on pretty much every tank of gas in mixed driving... probably 60% highway / 40% city.

Re: DoD just a gimmick? Anyone see real results?
Wifey usually drives it, but on my commute, which is still mostly city, I got maybe 17.5? My blazer gets about 16, and my Z w/ the A4 got about 18.9. Kind of dissapointing, but to have a V8 singing to me in a 4 door family car, I aint complaining ONE BIT!
I see you're closing in on 10,000 posts Darth, I think we need to have a poll on what day do we think Darth will hit 10,000!
EDIT: Darth and Z284ever are 9th and 10th in total posts on CamaroZ28.com!

Ya, been closing in for a while... I haven't been posting near as much as I used too... Charlie is gonna zoom right past me.
... heheh.I'm looking forward to getting the 10,000 post wall plaque, photo ID card, and access to the secret forums!

The Hemi has always been known to be a pig when it comes to gas. I'm not too surprised at all about its abismal numbers. Especially when you consider the fact that it isn't available in anything that weighs under 2 tons or with a manual transmission.
In the V8 W-car's case, I have to assume it's mostly the A4's fault. But why the difference in the A4 LS1's mileage? I almost wonder if the FWD transaxle is less efficient than say, the traditional F-body drivetrain?
Edit: Darth, I signed up 4 months before you and I'm not even at 4,000? GET A LIFE!!!

Just learn that a V8 is a V8, running with eight cylinders :D
In my experience, I had 2 V8 cars. My 1996 Camaro Z28 and current 2001 A6. The Camaro would average about 14 - 16 mpg with mixed driving, mostly city. I admit, I did not drive it like Prius, but it was reasonable. I wasn't driving like a maniac either. Once I got 27 mpg on the highway, but only once.
Now going to my current A6. It has 4.2L, 300 HP, but the car is porky at 4050 lbs. City driving, I got the worst milage of 12 mpg. Currently I am averaging 16 mpg with mixed city/highway, but a lot of stop n go traffic even on the highway.
The best I got was around 20 mpg, and that was once, and i don't know by what miracle.
This made me realize that V8 is V8 - it will usually consume more fuel than V6, supercharged or not. And definitely more fuel that even powerful turbo 4-cylinder.
EPA numbers are worth jack to me. The only way for me to even begin approaching their numbers is to drive it so gently that people honk their horn. I must avoid all traffic, so city driving just means stopping for an occational stop light. And highway traffic means driving 60 mph on cruise control. Perhaps then I will reach EPA numbers, regardless of what car I'm driving.

How much does stop and go driving kill your mileage? I only drive stop and go now sadly. By the time I get it to 3rd I have to SLAM on the brakes not to rear end the car. It moves but very slowly because always some dumbo in front will cut you off and do 25 mph. BTW this is all city driving in heavy traffic with a very heavy foot, i'm getting 22ish mpg, which is kind of sad considering it's a 1.8L
FWIW don't cars get better mileage broken in too or is that just BS?
