DCX to sell current Sebring, Stratus tooling to GAZ.

From AN:

DaimlerChrysler sells Sebring, Stratus tooling to GAZ
DaimlerChrysler AG is selling the tooling for the outgoing Chrysler Sebring and Dodge Stratus sedans to Russia's Gorky Automotive Works, or GAZ. GAZ plans to take possession of the tooling after the upcoming model changeover at DaimlerChrysler's Sterling Heights, Mich., plant in May. story

That is so strange. I wonder if this happens more often than we think.

Volga built a version of a mid-sixties Fiat for decades.

I think it happens (or happened) quite a bit in nations that are trying to develop their own auto industry. IIRC a lot of early Hyundais were old Mitsubishi designs, and some Daewoos were old GM/Opel designs.

Maybe if GM were to buy some old Accord tooling from Honda, they might finally have a mid-size entry that got some respect in the marketplace

Nope, I can't see how that would change anything. For example, the Matrix and Vibe are the same car. Why is it that the Matrix will be on a "10 best" or "Reliable" list, and the Vibe won't be?

well i think he was being facetious. although the same car, the vibe and matrix are built at different locations. why? who knows. maybe because GM had to have at least one car built at nummi

interesting note: vibe is the only car in the past 16 years (thats when the first award at nummi is listed) of nummi not to get any awards for quality. although the prizm did get a few. wonder if thats because the media wasnt as biased and dead set against anything American

One other thing. NUMMI uses toyota's production system. take that as you will

NUMMI also builds some pickups and may build the Corolla as well.

Rodeo and the Landwind look like they might be a good example:

Too bad GM didn't sell the F-body tooling. Somewhere in the world there would have been a lot of happy people

You are most likely thinking about Lada (VAZ).

Re: DCX to sell current Sebring, Stratus tooling to GAZ.

How about the late 1980s/early 90s Pontiac LeMans (shameful use of the name, IMO) that was originally an Opel Kadett design, but manufactured by Daewoo.

Opel Kadett

Becomes...Daewoo Nexia:

Becomes...Pontiac LeMans:

The early 90's Lotus Elan became the Kia Elan. I think the Qvale/DeTomasa Mangusta was bought by MG before they went bust. I'm pretty sure the MG version was restyled though.
