DCX lost €3.9 billion on Smart over four years
DaimlerChrysler stock has soared ever since news hit the street that a Chrysler sale was imminent. After all, Chrysler lost $1.5 billion in the 3rd quarter of 2006, and the Germans were convinced that the Pentastar was the root of all their problems. Now comes word from German newspaper Handelsblatt that DCX dropped a cool €3.9 billion on the Smart brand in only four years, which puts the microcar brand in Jaguar-bad territory.
Even with all the money it stole from Chrysler it still can't make the company profitable.

I am surprised that there are not more articles reporting the angle that MB ran Chrysler into the ground and thier management was very poor. It seems all we hear about is how Chrysler is bringing Mercedes down not that they don't know how to manage anything other than themselves as proof with the Smart thing.
I thought Smart was supposed to be the next big thing and everyone will want one of these micro cars so they better bring them to the US? (thick sarcasm).

Now, if the "merger of equals" had actually been Chrysler buying Mercedes (as if they'd have wanted to), and billions were sunk, you can bet you'd be seeing the articles berating the mismanagement that occurred...
I remember looking into the smart roadster. I converted it from euros and it comes out to around $20k (starting base price). Too much for me. But I still think it could survive in the US market. Its a cheap sports car, thats new and different.
I saw a Smart car parked in someone's driveway here a couple days ago. I thought about taking a picture just because of the sheer oddity of it. I'm honestly not sure they'll ever catch on here. Sure we want more efficient cars, but at the risk of driving that? With all the other monsterous trucks running around? I dunno.....
