Curious, how many of you ever buy new cars?
Re: Curious, how many of you ever buy new cars?
I buy new every 2-3 years. It takes me that long to save up the money to pay cash. That explains why I am driving a Matrix, I just can't see paying 50 large for a new car when I can buy investment property that makes me money.

My 85 special service Mustang was under 2 years old, My 97 Z28 was just a year old, and all my other cars were used. I'm very cheap.
Last year, the GTO was enough to make me break my promise to myself, and I looked around for one. I got disgusted with the dealers I went to (at least 12) and it put me off. In fact, after one exchange with a dealer I stopped down the street just to look at a new Mach 1 Mustang, and came within a whisker of buying it because the dealer wasn't trying to rape me on the price and actually acted like he might want to actually sell the car.
I nearly took Ford's bait last year when they were offering advance purchases on the 2005 Mustang guranteed at MSRP (instead of any potential dealer markups).
With as much leasing that's going on, and leased vehicles being turned in after 12 months and reposessions (I'll have a dealer's liscense by the end of this month, so I'll be able to go to autions again), it really doesn't make sense to get a brand new car unless it's a personal preference......
..... unless it's a GTO that is.

Well, I have to say that I have only bought one new car. My 1998 V6 Camaro. Since then I have bought 3 used cars, 2 Camaro's and 1 Sebring. I was saving up for a possible 5th gen...then I got married.
Cars last a lot longer than a lot of people think, and I haven't seen the use in paying the extra bucks for the new car smell yet. You just have to be VERY careful in looking for the one that's been taken care of.

Well, I'm only 25 and I've bought one car new...an '02 Grand Am GT. With all my dealer discounts and GM card points, this $22,425 car cost me $15,495. 17 months later, I traded it in and got my GP.
So while I've owned:
'87 Skyhawk winter beater
'89 Camaro RS
'89 Formula
'95 Grand Am
'97 Z28
'02 Grand Am GT
'01 Grand Prix GT
Only one has been new. My next car will be new as well, however. I have 2 plans in mind. One is to either purchase a new '06-'07 MC SS or a G6 GTP coupe...depends on what they drive like. Or, keep the GP as a daily driver and buy either a 5th gen when they come out, or a 3rd gen. My GP has a long way to go yet before it needs to go bye bye...so we'll see. That V8 MC is looking better every day though...
In general, my long term goal is probably for my fiance to purchase a new car, finance it for 4 years, pay it off and then I'll run it for 4 years and she gets a new car. By the time 8 years have gone by, it'll be ready to be replaced and I'll get her leftover. That way, we have one car payment and she gets the new car and is happy. Thankfully, we have the same taste in cars
In reality, she may get a G6 GTP and I'll run the GP in the ground...time will tell.

Re: Curious, how many of you ever buy new cars?
Bought a 2004 Avalanche last year.
We did shop around for used ones, but there wasn't a good selection to chose from.. and the used ones were relatively expensive too! and some of them did not live pampered lives.
Hope to get about 10 years/125k miles worry free miles out of it at least.
Hearing about the GMT-900's and what they could be like, (better interiors, 6 speed auto's more powerful engines), it sounds tempting to a trade in 2007/8.. But I think I rather save the $.. and/or get a car instead.. or maybe mod the Camaro..
or perhaps a used C5... although they also seem to still hold their values well too. Almost to the point that it might just be worth spending extra $ and get a new one..
Same with a M3.. even the older mid 90's one (which are my favorite in looks).. The resale value make me feel that I might as well save some more money and get a new one. especially when you factor in time and money to freshen everything back up to new.

Re: Curious, how many of you ever buy new cars?
closest i've been was an 03 F-150 Super-crew with 3k miles back in 2003. Not really new, but new enough for me.
Other cars i've owned have been atleast 3 years old when i bought them. Currently, my budget (college student) serves as the biggest limiting factor and used purchases just make sense for me at this time.
Even when i'm done with school, i still may or may not go the new route. It always hard to justify it when a slightly/gently used model with under 3-5k miles can be had for so much less than new. I try to be frugal and so this is the better route for me on most general purchases. But on a performance/sports-car purchase, i'd take the new car route. I don't like the idea of buying something that has been previously abused/flogged, and that's the type of life most performance cars live.
Like Klee, i pay in cash. I hate loans and owing money. If i don't have the $$$, then i simply can't afford it. This will also apply to my future home purchases

Re: Curious, how many of you ever buy new cars?
I never buy new cars becasue I cannot afford a new car. They are wayyyy too expensive. I buy cars 8-10 yrs old and have around 100000 miles when I buy them. My 94 Bonneville had 111000 miles (Feb 03 when I bought it for $2000) and still runs like at top with 160000 miles. I've had to put in a fuel pump, water pump, left rear strut, master cylinder, and right rear brake line. I am in the market for a newer car. I'd like an Olds Aurora (97-99) and no more than $4500.
Re: Curious, how many of you ever buy new cars?
Im still young, juuuust bought my first house, and cant justify doing that yet. Maybe in 3 years or less. If I do, it will be a Camaro hopefully or something like that. Anything else and I will buy used.
They're soo much cheaper used and newer GM cars and trucks are usually real dependable so its just hard to convince myself into paying $600 a month for something that I could buy for half that, ya know?
Maybe if I didnt rack up soo many miles on my vehicles it would be different.
