Re: Couple of deaths to announce today...

I personally like the Neon.

They were cheap as thumbtacks (and showed it), and were so spotty in quality you could talk to 2 people with the same milage and same year Neon and get 2 widely different stories of it's reliability. But it's the 1st American car to be accepted in the "Import/Tuner" community, and the car has plenty of parts to personalize them.

To top it off, the SRT-4 is mind blowing. It's way too rough as a daily driver, but it's a hoot on the track or dodging (no pun intended) traffic on the freeway.

The Excursion is probally useful in rural areas and with contractors. Although I think they're overkill to the extreme, I'm still amazed these things get more flak than heavier, more fuel hungry Hummers do.

For fishing or serious racing - the stuff is all in the boat or trailer, so you don't want a pickup bed... at all. The additional row of seats to haul 6 to 9 friends is far more useful.

Many friends use them to pull offshore fishing boats and race cars from NC to Texas, Kansas, Jersey, and all over the country.

I guess the problem is that too many bought them just to take the kids to school and go out for dinner, giving them a bad wrap for running around town instead of what they are really capable of doing. I guess if you gots da money...

I do not contest that the behemoth was huge, and unpractical for daily buzzing around town - not at all. It's like when people break a screwdriver using it to pry things apart... ya just kinda say - duh.
But it was THE BEST at doing what it was designed to do - bar none.

PS - I have personally been in a 2003 Excursion pulling a 35' Donzi with three 275 Mercury Race Engines on the back of it. Boat = 8000lbs dry. Engines = 900lbs each. 260 gals fuel = 1950lbs. Trailer = 1800lbs. Coolers, 3-40lb bags of ice, gear = ???lbs You do the math. It pulled that rig like a raped-ape, and I just busted smiles one after the other as we passed Toyota trucks, Nissans, and the like running 80mph down highway 220 South!
Point here is that 90% of them that I saw had one soccer mom behind the wheel and her two spoiled kids in the back seat playing with crayons. Total waste.

"Pasche"? I assume you meant Posh? How is this Posh? I mean it's a damn truck so I don't expect it to be super nice, but you make it sound like it was nicer than most anything else out there when I wouldn't even consider that interior on par for a modern day SUV of any sort.

Lastly, passing Toyotas and Nissans with it made you smile? Why? Were they at their top speed and struggling to keep up with you? Were they full ton trucks? No... so isn't it kind of dumb to feel superior to something that's not even intended to be remotely comparable to what you're driving? Compare a Nissan or Toyota compact truck to a Ford or Chevy compact truck and get back to me on towing capacities. Before you even bother I'll tell you that I know for a fact that the Tacoma and even the Ridgeline that y'all love to hate so much, out-tows the Colorado/Canyon by a LOT, and I think the ranger as well. That's apples to apples. I don't want to get started on that tangent, but I just find it strange that you'd even bring it up. It's like looking at a little kid and feeling like a badass becase you could kick his ***. He's a KID, he's not supposed to be able to kick your ***.

I'm not, I'm a realist that often times takes up the devil's advocate point of view in an overly aggressive manner to make up for the fact that the other 50 guys in the thread are usually die-hard domestic. A bunch of guys sitting around and agreeing with each other constantly doesn't make for a very insightful or interesting conversation IMO.

Yeah, you play it up alright...

Anyway, FWIW I love the SRT-4. I drove one a year ago and still can't get that car out of my head. I thought about buying it, too...but couldn't go from a leather lined, smooth-as-silk Grand Prix to a rough riding, buzzing econobox. It was intoxicating though If they made a 2 door version, maybe I would have bought one after all...

They really need a 4 door Caliber. Having just a wagon is complete stupidity, and will not make for a decent SRT model. Dodge dealers screamed so much over the Magnum, they got the Charger (remember...Dodge was envisioned to be wagon only, with Chrysler getting sedans). Lets hope they scream some more with the Caliber.

Maybe they can call the potential 4 door model something cool...like a Duster or a Demon Hey, they already sacrificed the Charger moniker...they can do it again...

i like the Duster idea....a friend of mine runs a 73 in quick-8 class. i always liked that name....leave Demon for an alternative to the Challenger.

Re: Couple of deaths to announce today...

Have any of you guys ever owned or even driven in an Excursion? They are the equivalent of a pickup truck except more or less practical in many cases. It gets like 12 mpg for a v10 and may be a dog still but does its job. They are one of the most reliable and rugged vehicles I have ever seen, like a pickup. The only problems ours has ever had is the carpet getting a little shredded in the cargo area but thats is only loaded up with tools. Dont know the thing before you drive one or in one. Also, I have never seen a woman driving an excursion in my life, its in no way a soccer suv.

Apparently you have never seen the Neon's remarkable collection of TSBs. It really is a crappy car.

Average reported mileage for the Excursion 14/19 on owner boards.

So it does blow the Nissan out of the water.

GM has nothing comparable either. You want a REAL HD SUV towing rig? Excursion TD.

Here's the funny part, most Excursions I see are gas V8s and V10s. The public is still biased against diesels(too noisy, too dirty, blah blah). Then they get pissed off when their 7500lb gas SUV gets 8mpg. Then they list it for half price on autotrader with 19000 miles. The used TD Excursions for sale will have at least 75K miles and be selling for >75% of new price.

Uh... did you miss something? I never mentioned gas milage anywhere in my post.

But with that said yeah diesels get impressive gas milage, especially per weight in larger less aerodynamic vehicles. That has been a fact of life for a couple decades now. The gas engines in the Excursion don't get horrible milage, but they don't get anything surprisingly good, either.

Ford Excursion is very popular in Iraq with the defence contractors. How long before the Expedition XL comes out?

I'd rather be driving a Duramax GMT900 Suburban 2500 anyways.

If only GM would figure out how to build the duramax into the next gen suburban.

It is available in the current gen 2500 series suburban IIRC... and the 2500 Suburban is more similar in size to the Excursion than the 1500 Sub is.

More info please. Just ran the builder on Chevy's site and it's not there. Is this a COPO sub?
