Post Corvette Rule?

Ok in the past GM as we know has had an unwritten "nothing is faster then a vette rule". We also now know that Pontiac has declared that the GTO will be their equivalent of the vette or their own halo car. So does this mean, assuming that over the next few years as the GTO becomes more powerful we may see a model of it (Judge?) as fast or faster than a vette? I doubt we'll see the goat handle as well as the vette but with a beefed up LS1 or LS6 I’m sure it could run down a base model C5. Then again the C6 may come out with gobs of power and this may not be a problem. Any thoughts on the GTO being the new halo for Pontiac and its effect on the vette?

On one other note, anyone want to see a GTO vert? I think that would be very cool.

I think there's too much overall control by management these days to let a Vette beater out from under another brand. Unlike in 86/87 when Buick slide the GN out and said ohhhhh looky what we have here I have a feeling there was some squabbling between brands when the GN hit the streets.

As cool as it would be, I doubt the Judge will ever walk the streets again. A little juvenille for GM at the current time.

Damnit.

No, GTO will not walk C5, even the Judge, should such ever be released. The upcoming stock GTO will most likely run the 1/4 in 13.8 to 14.2 range. Add some modifications to the engine that Judge package would do, and at best you have mid 13 or low 13 second car. C5 is good to grab high 12's at the strip.

ANd handling of Corvette... Well, I don't need to dwell on the point, with Corvette being almost 500 pounds lighter than GTO.

I think a lot of us are spoiled becasue we see and hear about F-bodies taking down C5's or Cobra's running with them. The fact is this the Corvette is head and shoulders above any other car GM currently makes. Its the whole package in a light and highly manouverable platform. From the low weight to IRS, to hydroformed frame, to true duel exhaust, throw in its nearly 50/50 weight proportions and the car can do it all. A jack of all trades. Sure soem F-bodies beat a Vette in a straight line and sure some handle better with mods but the Vette sometimes needs no more than a driver change to fix the problems. The car get soo much more technology than any otehr car save a few Caddys that its silly to think another car living off Vette tech LS1's (F-body or GTO) stand a chance to beat it. The Vette has active handling and will probably soon get more tech for the C6. Besides the option for a 405hp LS6 in a 3115 lb car translates into serious performance than only highly priced exotics can match. SO no the GTO is in no danger of taking down a Vette.

Actually, the upcomming roadster from Cadillac is expected to be just about as quick as Corvette & will have near if not identical top speed. However, it will have it's suspension tuned more for ride than handling, so the C6 will still outrun it on a handling course.

I think a few here are forgetting that the C6 will be quicker than the C5, so even if somehow the GTO is as quick as a current Vette (GTO will have the current LS1 engine tuned for more torque) the next Vette motor will be more powerful than it currently is.

Also, remember Buick Grand Nationals & Pontiac TransAm T/A 6.6s when you have doubts about GM making anything as fast as any same year Corvettes.
