I'm against all of this because I don't want to pay for this junk, and I doubt it will be very effective.

Besides, you always have a choice to not to drive sleepy.. Just don't do it.

Its like saying you don't have a choice but to drive and read emails at the same time.

I'm all for the beeping at you when you cross a line w/o turn signals.

It should:
A) get ppl to use their signals and
B) probably prevented me from wrecking my car when i dozed off (I felt wide awake one second then BAM I hit the gaurdrail)

its sad that we need something like this nowadays. I remember watching a show about the autoban and they had one of the guys who builds porches and he tests all the cars out b4 they sell them. He explains how in germany that driving is not a right its a priveledge that is very respected. People dont multitask they put both of their hands on the wheel and pay attention to driving as an art and something that should be treated as a gift not a given. Thats how I feel about driving, I know that if i fudge something up im never gonna be able to afford insurance again, might hurt someone or myself, and for what to talk on a phone?

I take driving seriously, its fun but should still be taken seriously, not paying attention at 65mph is just stupid... its bad enough when driving slow and a moron has a phone and isnt paying attention. Even though I wished there was another way around it (death to those who drive like idiots ) this system might be interesting depending on how it works out. If it forces people to at the minimum use their turn signals when changin lanes then i think its done its job, saves 1 life its done its job. But like all this newfangled technology in cars i think people will learn to over rely on it. The simple yet complex solution would be to change peoples views of driving a 3000pound cars and 6000pound suv's that are basically rolling weapons of death and destruction. And make people realize that driving is something to be respected not treated like an afterthought. Will it ever happen, probably not but at least someones trying to help.

Actually, you have a good point!

The reason cell phones are number one on my list, though, is because it is sooooooo much more common... plus people get ANGRY talking on the phone many times, and their driving gets even worse.

If so, I say make these things mandatory on everything!
I completely agree! NO ONE around here uses their turn signal when changing lanes, and many don't even use them when actually making a turn. I would estimate the percentage of drivers I see who never use a signal for anything is at least 45%. It's absolutely pathetic. More than a warning system, I'd like to see police write tickets for not using your signal. Wait, nevermind. They don't use their's either.

OK - here's a different idea...

Let's put a simple encoder on the steering wheel, and write a code that will activate the turn signal lamps automatically while the wheel is out of "home" position (straight ahead). The encoder will know if the wheel is left or right of center by the count direction from home position.

Now ALL wheel motion results in signaled movement.
Of course the original turn signal lever is still there, and used when we smarter drivers want to actaully FORECAST or WARN others of our intent before we actually do it.

No friggin' beeps in my ears, no voice berating me, and DANG-SHURE nothing to try to drive my car for me either!

Now we're all happy, and I'm rich.

I would prefer to see something that warns people when they're too close to the object in front when travelling at speed.

This kinda thing is foolproof and easy given the use of an inexpesnive ultrasonic measuring device in the nose of the car.

If speed>threshold1 and distance<threshold2 then make annoying beep (or even better reduce speed slowly until it's safe).

Too many impatient ********* driving 1 or two car lengths of my tail at signifcant speeds. Rear end collisions are without doubt 100% avoidable if people would quit tailgating. I do not want to be hit in the rear and have my spine and my treasured car wasted by some clueless / aggressive numbskull f**knuts.

There's almost no point in doing that though.. so instead of seeing a car suddenly cut you off, you see suddenly see a blinking car cut you off..

Remember, just cause you use turn your blinkers on for half a cycle before you switch lanes doesn't really make you any better than someone that doens't use them at all

Heh, I was talking to my coworker, and he said, "How about they make it so my horn automatically honks at people that don't use their signals?" Lol!
