If I were in the market for a new, cheap compact car, this may be enough to sway me into a Chrysler.
In its latest ‘Let’s Refuel America’ campaign Chrysler LLC will be offering customers of its Chrysler, Jeep and Dodge brands fuel at a price of just $2.99 per gallon over the next three years to help spur sales. As fuel prices continue to head skywards, consumers in the U.S. have been shifting away from heavy SUVs and pickups in droves.
Last month saw passenger cars overtake pickups and SUV in the sales race for the first time in decades and according to Chrysler’s own research 76% of customers cite rising fuel prices as their number one concern when purchasing a car. In response, Chrysler will offer this latest economic stimulus package.
With the U.S. purchase of eligible Chrysler, Jeep and Dodge vehicles, customers will be able to receive a fuel card that immediately lowers their fuel price to $2.99 a gallon and keeps it there for three years. As part of the campaign, Chrysler will also be offering up to $3,000 cash back on some models including the Chrysler PT Cruiser, Dodge Charger (pictured), Jeep Grand Cherokee, Dodge Dakota and Dodge Ram.
The following vehicles are eligible for the Let’s Refuel America program:
Small/Compact Car
Dodge Caliber, Chrysler PT Cruiser, Chrysler PT Cruiser Convertible
Mid-size Car
Dodge Avenger, Chrysler Sebring, Chrysler Sebring Convertible
Large Car
Dodge Charger, Chrysler 300, Dodge Magnum

Compact SUV

Perhaps I am just not entirely educated on things, but wouldn't discounted prices encourage more consumption that leads to an increase in demand, contributing to the higher gas prices overall?
Wow what a totally LOUSY deal for the customer, but because customers are stupid they will eat it up.
Ok so instead of giving you a huge $3000 rebate they will give you a gas card limited to 12,000 miles a year.
So lets say your dodge gets 20mpg average 12000/20=600gal of fuel a year. With fuel at $3.49 they pay $.50/gal so .50x600=$300 a year they are saving you. So for 3 years they are paying you/saving you $900 max.
Considering the erroding value of the dollar over time, this is even less.
Yet consumers eat this PR up.
Also if you get a flex fuel, e85 is usually under $2.99 so you get nothing if you use it.
$900>$3000

I didn't do any math. I just thought it was an interesting proposal, not that I am going to be buying a car anytime soon. Thanks, I am going to go put my dunce hat on and sit in the corner.

Ok, from what I see this is in addition to 3k rebates on some models. Also, a few years back either Chrylser or GM did this with 2.00 a gallon gas. This is not the first we have seen of this.
at least some of it. Just replace better mileage with lower prices(practically the same) and it's what you guys just don't understand for some reason.

They've had similar promotions in Canada over the last few years. I'm not sure of the exact details, but they were something like 20 cents off per litre, to a maximum of $500.
The point is not necessarily the total savings, but the psychological effect. With high gas prices people feel the pain every week when they fill up, or every day when they read about high gas prices and just have to think about buying gas. Having this subsidized gas insulates people from that phychological effect so they won't have to stress themselves about gas prices any more, and that can be more effective than offereing a better overall cost.

They should call it the "Let's Refuel America - as long as you are buying one of our worst-selling, worst-looking vehicles - Program".
Gimmick. No more, no less.
And Yes JasonD... you are EXACTLY right. This could be a political nightmare for Chrysler (and Cerberus) if there is anyone in Washington with half a brain.
I'dda voted "not" for this if I were in their marketing committe.

Good point but say with a Dodge Ram Hemi and in say CA the math could look a little different.
12,000mi/13mpg = 923 gal at $4.05 (and that's just this week, should gas go up to say $4.50 in summer driving or more as expected with $120+ ppb. the math will get better.) They pay $1.06 per gallon.
That's $978 per year and with the Ram you still get the $3000 rebate.
There is more to this deal for the right vehicles if you look closer.
