They are definitely reverse-engineered copies of other manufacturer's cars. GM has even said that the Chery copy's panels fit the original GM car they were copying from, better than GM's own panels fit. However Chery has said they are not bringing the GM clone to North America, most likely to avoid lawsuits.

Thats funny and sad at the same time.

I would buy a turbo V8 with a 10/100,000 warranty at Walmart for $20,000.

1. The car that Chery is accused of copying is the 3-cylinder Daewoo Matiz - AKA the "Chevy Spark." I seriously doubt that there is any market in the USA for a .8 liter displacement 3-cylinder Korean-designed one box microcar.

2. Copying a Daewoo isn't half as bad as pirating software and DVDs. Could you honestly call any Daewoo car "INTELLECTUAL PROPERTY?"

Not sure, but I've had a couple of their AK-clones and still have their version of the SKS and all were pretty nice examples and dirt cheap. I understand their Colt 1911 clones were fairly nice too for cheap...

I don't possibly see how their cars could be made for more than 50% less than the rest of the world's, and still come even remotely close to competing with anyone else.

He doesn't have some secret that noone else knows unless he's using slave labor in China.

Ah, I talked to my friend thats into guns, and he said it was cause at one point they switched over to stamped steel parts to cut corners.. Since stamped steel parts are cheaper, but generally flimsier, after some use, the parts wear down, warp, etc... and then you get odd behavior like guns jamming up or unintentionally fiiring..

I"m guessing its a combination of dirt cheap labor(low wages and probably little to no benifits), cheap manufacturing techniques (like not as safe, not as environmental, not as human friendly), cheap/copied designs, and far less testing.. and the government essentially letting anything slide..

I know its possible to build high quality goods over there... but unless someone proves it, I will have the consumer perception that Chery cars = cheap + unsafe/tested rippoffs.

While I do wish all the best to Bricklin in his latest endeavor, I don't see this thing going too far. Unfortunately...

Don't count them out yet. The company has some big backing, and some cars will be designed by Bartone and Pinifarina of Italy. Their Crossover SUV looks a look nicer than some GM desgins.

I would say we hope they fail, because if they succeed it will be the end of the US auto industry as we know it. Just like the Japenese destroyed our consumer electronics industry, China could do the same with our auto industry.

Re: China cars start at $7,000

I think it's funny for people to rip on chinese made cars, when the clothes on their backs where most likely made in china.

if they're the 2nd largest automaker in a country with over a billion people in it, I'd say that's got to count for something.

Can you seriously imagine them coming out with a sports car with the power of a chevy, interior quality of a VW, and reliability of a honda? All at the price of a kia?

sick...

I'd be *****y eyed from the perma-grin on my face at the sound of that deal....

The US auto unions are Chinas best friend. Unions hold back the big 3 real bad.

I see china stealing more sales from imports than domestics.
