Chevy Volt goes production?
GM has said from the beginning that the Volt is being treated as a production vehicle with the variable being how long it woulld take to get the battery technology to acceptable levels. This is not news. GM however is doing a great job of fighting the PR war against the "they will never build it" and the "it was just a publicity stunt" crowds by keeping the development of this car very open and transparent. The frequent updates and releases make it hard to dismiss their intent with this program which is to build it-as soon as possible.
Still though, is the extra cost on your electric bill from pluggin gin going to outweigh the cost of gas to go an equal distance? Is it significantly less expensive to recharge it from an outlet than it is to put gas in the car had it not been electric at all?
Even if it is charged from the gasoline engine/generator it is expected to get 40-50mpg
The Tesla Roadster goes 200 miles on a little over ~$3 of electric.

The Volt will share the next-gen Delta platform. Wonder if the Cobalt replacement will share similar styling?
A new Prius is due by 2009... so Toyota has a chance to pass up GM, since IIRC the earliest the Volt could come out would be 2010...
