A Chevy dealer (only) selling brand new Pontiacs

I didnt think GM allowed this... but, there is a local Chevy (only Chevy) dealer that had 6-8 new Pontiac G5's delivered to it.

I was driving through, and they marked on the windshield to deliver to this specific Chevy dealership and from the what I gathered by glancing at the cars and the writing, they were actually ordered by the Chevy dealership for someone... possibly a fleet order or something.

No, the owner does NOT own a Pontiac dealer anywhere else, I am sure of that.

I was all but positive that a dealership was not allowed to order or sell a brand they are not franchised to...??? Add to that, why would they sell an order of 6-8 G5's instead of just ordering up 6-8 Cobalts? Not like there is really much of a difference even to the customer.... I mean G5 is badge engineering in pretty much all of it's ugly glory.

I'd assume whoever the buyer was wanted the G5 over the Cobalt otherwise they would've gotten those instead.

When I was selling cars we'd occassionally do some buying from other dealerships to bring in a car our customer was looking for (maybe the ones we had in stock came with the wrong equipment, color, etc), so I suppose that could be the case as well.

That is certainly possible, but I still don't understand why they would purchase Pontiacs through a Chevy dealership, and why GM would allow that.

I could maybe see a dealer trade, even though it would still break the franchise rule, but these were fresh off the car carrier from Lordstown (Lordstwon is local to my area, and obviously this dealership)... and the markings and paperwork ont he car indicate that these G5's were ordered by and delivered directly to the Chevy dealership.

More than likely this is a "Courtesy Delivery" - that is for fleet just as you said. The buyer may have some kind of contract with Pontiac but need to pick up the vehicles at another location - so they ship them to another GM dealer.

My father was a Buick salesman for many years (they eventually added Chevrolet, but for most of the years were Buick only).

He used to get "Courtesy Deliveries" of GMC Astro Vans for the Federal Reserve here in KC because they were the closest GM dealership. They didn't handle the transaction, just the delivery of the cars to the customer.

Could have took over some of the new inventory of a closed Pontiac dealer in greater area?

That makes sense!

I knew of the courtesy delivery (some online Corvette sellers use this a lot) but wasn't sure if that could cross franchise lines, but all adds up and wouldnt break the franchise rules for sales that I know of.

We have that here in Ottawa, I saw a chevy dealership with brand new G6's and grand prixs (including GXP models). They never use to have any pontiac stuff. It started this year.

I think I have yet to see a G5 here in the Seattle area. In fact, the closest Pontiac dealer here on the Eastside just closed. How long have G5's been out?

About two years. I know how Seattlites love their domestics.

My best friend from college lives in Seattle and gets tired of people telling him his 2008 BMW is "just" a 328. If he had a G5 they'd probably tell him to take the bus instead, LOL.
