Chevy Cobalt

I was at Chevy's website and saw a new car that is coming late this year...

The Chevy Cobalt looks to be pretty promising. In terms of selling or marketing, it looks like they have something good on their hands.

It looks somewhat Civic-esque but not so much that it'd get confused. The looks package on the SS version has a Supercharged 205hp Ecotec 4 banger.

IMHO - This is exactly what needed to replace the Cavalier. Looks pretty good, has a potent engine package and at least for the r!cer generation, it finally will give Chevy a real niche in that market.

Now, I personally don't think I'd own one, but at least it'll continue to generate some revenue for GM and allow them to come out with something else that is better than the competition.

I agree.

I expect Cobalt to be a winner for GM.

Pretty late to the party since it was introduced out here at the LA Auto Show last December & has been gone over plenty of times since then.

But I agree with you that the Colbalt (at least the 2 door) is going to be a hot ticket for Chevrolet. Especially the blown SS.

Chevrolet is going to have pretty much the "Tuner" coupe market to itself till Dodge's "(what-ever-it's-named)" replaces the Neon in a couple of years.

I could even see owning a blown Colbalt SS as a daily driver if the price is right (as in Dodge SRT-4 price).

it does look to be a good little car. but just like everything at GM it's ~ 4-5 years late. just hope it's not TOO late to make a difference.

didnt know there was a deadline? This seems to jump over that 4 or 5 year gap you talk of and put it into the lead of the pack.

I was talking about the fact that Honda and Toyota made this econoclass hot rod sector popular about 10 years ago. 5 years seams like a reasonable time to develope a brand new car for the THEN already aging and ineffective Cavalier. so yeah, GM and Chevrolet are about 5 years late to the party as always.

BTW, how do you figure the Cobalt is going to "leapfrog" the competition? its a fine car if you stack it up against cars from 4-5 years ago and agains the current crop of last generation hardware. but we already have the Mazda 3 and it's stable mates and in 2 years or so Honda and Toyota will have their next gen cars out. GM is going to have to go back to deeply rebating the Cobalt in no less than 2 years just to keep the sales going again. sound familiar?

I havn't driven a Cobalt yet, but from everything I've seen it looks better than the Civic, Focus, Corolla, Neon, Ion, RSX, Sentra, Lancer, and the Korean car. The new Mazda 3 (Focus 2.0) looks pretty good, but not better than the Cobalt. The Cobalt is more atractive to me b/c it is offered as a coupe and has a better selection of engines. Now I'm sure in 2-3 years the Civic and Focus will one up the Cobalt but that is how the game is played.

Seems to me the CoLbalt has at least 1 thing in common with the CamEro.

I think people shouldn't be allowed to drive cars that they can't spell the name of.

Hey, I've got a Monty Carlow!

This is probably completely and utterly wrong, so if it is, tell me and point and make fun

Seems to me like having a S/C I4 isnt nearly as good for really high performance apps. Seems like the I4 would really struggle to turn that S/C at the higher boost levels.

My car freaks out when I turn the a/c on

Seriously, you can feel it bog the engine down big time

Hadn't thought of that but on the same token, whereas a S/C takes and puts a drain on the motor with a belt, the turbo I4 cars are basically blocking off part of the exhaust, thus headed for the same result... but, when those turbos or S/Cs kick in.... we all know what happens next.
