Safety in China is a totally new concept.
In a country where the government simply pays a family $4700 when a person is killed on a jobsite, then walks to the next guy in line and hands him a hardhat... safety is a joke. People over there are as close to "disposeable" as you can imagine. This comes through in their domestic cars and motorbikes too. The government just stepped in last June and started cracking down on bicycle manufacturers for making wheels and axles that were so cheap they were breaking; injuring people en-masse and even crippling or killing many.
I'm sure there are more than a few issues right now in trying to get the Chery and the Geely approved for crash-test worthiness in the States and Europe. Could have something to do with why they are not here by this summer as expected last year - I dunno.
I sure wouldn't want my name on a vehicle that gets a rep for being a fire-bomb or death-trap.
