Seems like a whole lot of engineering to get a paltry 170 HP. :blah: Of course, that has been a hallmark of German engineering...complexity for the sake of complexity.

121hp per liter, a 6.0L would be putting out around 726hp with the same hp/l rating.

I do admit it could probably be done with one or the other - but with an added benifit of Low Speed supercharger benifits - coupled with high speed Turbo gains. Cool definitely - Realistic? ehhh...

what about upgrading? how about a performance cam, full exhaust, larger turbo and supercharger pulley. i wonder how much power then?

i dont know, just a thought.

Which begs the question: "Why not start out with more displacement in the first place?" If this same setup was applied to, say, even a 2 liter Ecotec you'd have something halfway worthwhile.

I said this before, if gas prices keep climbing, for NO apparent reason just excuses, small displacement Turbo engines are the way of the future.
Reliabilty, this is the New Millineum, not 1982...
Easily upgraded, good mileage, decent power, light-weight package
Should do well, but to small for me

I think this is a brilliant idea. You get the same gas milage as you would if this engine was n/a or a diesel and the power of a 1.8t. Seeing the price of gas lately VW will probalbly sell a $hit load of them.

Sure it doesn't seem like much, but 170Hp probably does a good job moving such a light car. Also, you got to figure that any time an engine comes with forced induction from the factory, it is that much easier to modify by means of a s/c pulley swap or a boost controller.

Re: Check this out: supercharged and turbocharged production engine

ive seen a twincharged volvo engine before. there are rumored kits for the cobalt ss and IRL to convert it to twincharged. i think its a bad idea but thats personal preference. a guy in colorado has a twincharged WRX so he can spool his MASSIVE turbo..

I believe there was at least 1 Japanese car that came twin charged from the factory. Also Gavani or something like that is working with GM on a twin charged Cobalt SS. We should see it during SEMA.

I can only imagine what kind of reliability this thing will have, coming from VW.
