Charger and SRT8 300C coming with 420/390 6.1!

A little cut from the full lenght artical.

Sources within the auto maker tell Ward’s Chrysler will introduce a 300C SRT-8 early in 2005, with a Dodge Charger SRT-8 following in September.

Dodge poised to introduce Charger SRT-8 in September.
Both vehicles will be powered by the all-new 6.1L version of Chrysler’s highly acclaimed Hemi V-8 engine.

Sources claim the new powerplant will produce 420 hp and 390 lb.-ft. (528 Nm) of torque, a significant 24% horsepower boost from the 340 hp rating of the current 5.7L Hemi.

Sources also indicate the 6.1L Hemi will not feature Chrysler’s much-touted multi-displacement cylinder-deactivation system. The higher-output 6.1L Hemi will be reserved only for performance applications, where fuel economy routinely is not a top priority.

“We’ll keep the 5.7L for mass production applications, but the 6.1L will be reserved for limited high-performance vehicle production,” a Chrysler insider says.

The Charger SRT-8 will feature a 6-speed manual transmission as standard equipment, boosting the vehicle’s performance potential.

The source also indicates the auto maker is toying with the idea of launching a 2-door version of the Charger, as well as a 4-seat convertible, based loosely off the Chrysler Hemi C concept vehicle that debuted at the 2000 North American International Auto Show in Detroit.

It looks like we have a good old fashioned push rod HP war on our hands by 2007. We will have a GTO, Camaro, and vette on the GM side and a Charger, Magnum, viper and 300c on the Crysler side. Fun for all!

That is odd that the 5.7L Hemi and the 6.1L Hemi would both have the same torque rating of 390

Can't wait to see the Charger I hope it is under 3500lbs.

If 350 HP is not enough power for the GTO...what about the Camaro?

On my forums a big complain (which I don't get), is that $350 HP is not enough power for the $32K GTO. That makes me wonder what people would say if the model Camaro Chevy (SS or Z28?) puts against the Mustang GT had a 325-330 HP 5.3L for say $27K?

Opinions?

Riiiiight....Thats plently for a $32K vehicle that has as much to offer in terms of creature comforts as the GTO. Want more HP? Open up your wallets.

Man, this may change my plans on getting a Magnum RT. I can wait, especially for 420 hp and 390 lb/ft of torque on a Charger!

I'm really curious to see the MPG numbers on this thing since it will NOT offer cylinder deactivation. The LS2 may make of mockery of it if the numbers are not comparable...

Hmm... that's true. The LS1 already gets better mileage than the current hemi, and that does have DoD. From what I've heard, the LS2 will get better mileage than the LS1, and it'll have more torgue than the Hemi.

However, considering the charger is slated to have suicide doors or something like that, and this
The Charger SRT-8 will feature a 6-speed manual transmission as standard equipment, boosting the vehicle’s performance potential.
I might have a hard time choosing between the Charger and GTO.

..snipped

Uh NO. The 4142lb Magnum RT auto gets 17/24mpg VS the 3725lb auto GTO 16/21.

So it the looks like the Hemi is the most fuel efficient small block out there. Which makes sense since the closed chamber hemi head is the optimum design for combustion in a pushrod motor.

I have no intention of buying an auto, so I purposely started of my post comparing the manual to the auto. That's why I also stated that it will be a tough choice considering the Charger will have a manual and 4 doors.

a 6-speed manual should give decent highway mileage for the 6.1L, even without cylinder deactivation.

man..i would kill to see some real live spy shots of the Charger...there have to be mules running somewhere; somebody catch one!!

This car will be coming out right about the time i'm going to buy (next fall), so i've got some hard decisions to make...my first choice was the stang, but i'd have to wait at least until summer 06 for the SVT model....so a car i've only read about and never seen is at the top of my desire list for now...isn't that strange?
