Canyon/Colorado my thoughts

I'm in the market for a new truck and have been waiting for the new Canyon/Colorado to debut. Well they are out now so I went shopping... I looked at both and with just a few cosmetic exceptions these two trucks are identical. Although the GMC salesman tried to convince me that the GMC was a little nicer (better carpet, etc.) I saw no difference in the two. I test drove a Canyon Crew Cab 3.5/auto and really liked it. The I5 was really responsive and seemed to have plenty of power. There is a lot or room in the cabin and unlike the Sport Trac (which the wife was pushing) it actually had a usable bed!

The interior was the only area I found lacking. I didn't really care for the cloth seats, they seemed "cheap" looking. However, the leather package really takes care of that little problem. I liked the Chevy just a tad better, even though I'm no fan of the "chrome bar" grill it looked good on this truck and I liked the Z71 decals better than the "OffRoad" ones on the GMC. No "ricer" sticker comments please

In the end, I ordered the GMC Canyon because it was about $400 cheaper than the Chevy. I thought the GMC's are usually priced a little higher than their Chevy counterpart? Both are nice improvements over the models they replaced.

Sounds good. I am surprised too that the GMC was cheaper.

At first when I saw the pics of these new trucks, I was a little dissapointed in the looks department, but after seeing them in person, I can say that I do like them a lot better. I especially like the Z71 Colorado with the black grill area in place of the body color. I also wish they had the I6 in there though.

I'll be looking at these when my current truck dies. As long as the have more power than my 1990 4.3L work truck.

I sat in a Canyon at the Cleveland auto show... I was impressed.

I think these trucks will do well for GM.

I, also, am surprised the GMC weas cheaper... traditionally, it's the other way around...

I like the Colorado a lot. I've sat in them but havn't driven one yet.

THe Colorado looks great, but I think GMC should have used the D-Max front end to distinguish it more from the Colorado.

I think these are the best looking small/mid size truck available! I am disappointed in how there really isn't anything separating these 2. Though history shows they have always been essentially identical. With GMC being 'professional grade' or whatever, i would've hoped for a nicer interior, more powerful powertrain option in the canyon. Perhaps in the future. Maybe a denali option in the future. AWD, turbo (ala syclone).

I believe power is up slightly. 220HP in the Canyon/Colorado vs. 190HP in the S10/Sonoma. What I found a little disturbing is that torque is actually lower (225 for Canyon/Colorado vs. 250 for S10/Sonoma). This could be a problem for those having to tow, although I didn't look at the towing capacities.

Still, I definitely like the styling of the Canyons/Colorados better than the dated S10/Sonomas.

Its tow rating is only 4000 pounds. I was really stoked about these trucks but I need it to be able to tow a boat. Maybe they'll up it in future models.

One week ago I took delivery of a special order Colorado Crew Cab with 3.5L I5, 4L60E, 3.73 rear axle, leather interior, and the ZQ8 performance suspension and handling package. My previous truck was a 2000 Silverado extended cab, and at first I had a few reservations about the Colorado's smaller size. However, I never really needed all of the Silverado's bed length to begin with, so I find the Colorado's increased manuverability a fair trade off weighed against the loss of bed and interior space. So far, I'm very satisfied with the Colorado. The fit and finish are top notch, the 3.5L I5 performs well, and the ZQ8 package makes it a blast to drive. I haven't even been through the first tank of gas yet, so I can't comment on fuel mileage, but I think it will meet my expectations. If you're in the market, try one, and if you're at all inclined towards handling performance in your truck, drive a ZQ8.

I read that GMs goal was nicer ride vs. more towing wt. They said that midsize truck owners don't tow as often and don't tow big load. For people that need to tow more they make the Silverado

Yup, these trucks catch a lot of flack for low tow rating, but I think they did right (i'm sure a lot will disagree). If I needed a truck for towing, i would buy a full size. I haven't driven one, but if they ride as nice as people say, then GM did it right. I have a '96 sonoma, and i love it, but the ride has never been the greatest. I've also never used it for towing.

Generally that's true. Unfortunately, I fall into the category of "needs to tow a 4000lb ski boat but hates to drive a full size"

If i had to pick a compact truck, it'd be either the Canyon or the Colorado. The looks have grown on me, and the hp should be best in class.

Lately, I've been getting the urge to trade the f150 in for a smaller truck.
