Canada loves GM
GM Canada sales move forward in November 2005
(Data is not adjusted for the difference in selling days for November 2005 versus November 2004)
Oshawa, Ontario (December 1, 2005) – General Motors of Canada dealers and retailers delivered 36,290 vehicles in November 2005, a 1.2% increase over the same month last year. Passenger car sales for the month were down 2.1% to 17,390 units while truck sales increased by 3.7% to 18,780 units.

So why is GM so successful in Canada yet on a downward spiral just south of the border?

Actually, GM's share of the market in Canada is barely higher than it is in the US. While it might have the odd month of good sales, its slide has almost mirrored the slide in the US.
To the extent that GM is more successful here, it's because our market is skewed much more towards the low end of the market and practical vehicles, and GM Canada has been quick to respond. Chevrolet had three Daewoo models, and most of the models shared with the US are cheaper here on a straight currency exchange basis.

TORONTO, Dec 1 (Reuters) - Canadian automakers reported higher sales for November on Thursday with the Big Three North American manufacturers managing to stay ahead of their Japanese-based rivals.
General Motors of Canada (GM.N: Quote, Profile, Research), the country's biggest automaker, said its total monthly sales rose 1.2 percent to 36,290 vehicles from 35,869 in November 2004.
DaimlerChrysler Canada (DCXGn.DE: Quote, Profile, Research) came in second with a total of 15,866 vehicles sold in November, a 4 percent rise from 15,250 cars and trucks sold in the same month last year.
Ford Motor Co. of Canada (F.N: Quote, Profile, Research) said total November sales fell 0.3 percent to 15,076 vehicles from 15,126 as a 5 percent surge in truck sales was offset buy weaker cars sales, which dropped 16.9 percent.
Toyota Motor Manufacturing Canada (7203.T: Quote, Profile, Research), which has been gaining ground on the Big Three, said it sold 14,003 vehicles in November, a 4.2 percent jump over a year ago.
Honda Canada Inc. (7267.T: Quote, Profile, Research) reported a 15.7 percent increase in November sales as it sold 11,992 vehicles. Record sales of its new Honda Civic helped to offset a decline in its upscale Acura division.

You folk have got it so good over there... and I'm not even taking rebates into account. Our standard of living is similar to North America's... yet our Monaro costs over $60K but can be driven out the door for around $53K. That means Americans are prepared to pay only half of what we poor Aussies are prepared to fork out.
