CAFE flip-flop. Hmmmmm.
What I find interesting is that in a way, his flip flops work in his favor.
Think about it. The environmentalists are not going to mention the "new" stance, their speeches and newsletters will only mention his original anti-auto industry proposals in order to get their constituents on board.
The UAW crowd will do the opposite, only mentioning the newer stance.
This can help Kerry shore up his base througout the summer, until the debates, at which time his flip flops will be pointed out on a national stage. The more immediate issue is that moderates see the flip flopping as a character flaw.....which it is. So much for being a man of principle.
On a side note, I'm about to order one of these just to hack people off:

or this one, because its more contextually related to the topic at hand:

on the shirts. I might have to get one too!
Remember once upon a time, a person could change his mind, and it was called "Adapting", and it was praised. Today, it's called a "flip flop" and it's bad.
Clinton did a reversal on CAFE standards and excessive new automotive regulations once he became President when he actually had to govern instead of campaign. Governer Schwarzenegger has done plenty of flip flops to date, and he's also on track to be the most successful chief executive we've had in memory here in Cali.
In primaries, virtually no one votes except the hard core, the party loyalists, and the extremists. In order to get their votes, and round up people motivated enough to work on campaigns stuffing envelopes and making phone calls FOR FREE, you have to appeal to the left in the Democratic party, and the right in the republican. Once you get the nomination locked up, it's a sprint back to the center. Politics is all a game. Which group can be traded for the most benefit.
The only elected officials I've noticed that didn't do this were non-politicians: Jessie Ventura, Arnold Schwarzenegger, and Ronald Reagan, who all ran for & won as governers without any prior experience.
With Ralph Nader bleeding off the people that dragged the Democratic party down, and showing no signs of dropping out, why should Kerry continue to court those people. Pat Buchcanan served the same purpose (though to a lesser degree) for the Republicans last election.
Honestly, I suspect the Democrats are glad to see those treehugging, uncompromising, spoiled brats go so the rest of the party can focus on productive stuff.

I think when this fuel increase does get implied, and it eventually will, I think it will be the end of the current hp wars and definally the end of these big rwd sedans that the big 3 are starting to make again.

No, it's called standing for something and being committed to your ideals......not changing your position to favor whatever crowd or current opinion is in vouge.
Let's face it, Kerry hasn't met a position he hasn't flip-flopped on...... arrogant, uber rich, American hating liberal from the East....
Next......
