Question C6 headlights... Concealed or Exposed?

It seems, by all accounts, that the C6 will have exposed headlights (the first on a Corvette since the last C1 in 1962)...

I think this is a HUGE mistake... To me, pop-up (or at least concealed, whether it be pop-up, shuttered, slide away, holographic projection, or whatever you want to do to hide them ) is as much a part of today's Corvette as the quad circularish taillights, RWD, 2 seats and a V8 are...

SO... what do you think? Should the 2005 Corvette have concealed headlamps or exposed headlamps?

I understand a major concern (supposedly) is weight reduction... while that is a good thing, sometimes compromises need to be made in order to create the right look for any car! Part of Corvette's look is concealed headlamps!

In the past government regulations put limits on head lights. They had to be a given size and shape. Covers were also a no-no. In this era pup-ups had a reason to exist.

Today these limits have been lifted. The lights can now be styled to fit the car. Pop-ups have no valid reason to exist. To continue to use them would put them in the catagory of useless add ons. Like a hood scoop that goes no where.

I don't particularly like the way they do almost a full 360 turn to get to the open position, but I'm definitely FOR concealed headlamps.

Let me just say, as an owner of a car with pop ups, that they look great off, because there are no lights to interrupt the lines of the car, but when they are on [and up] they look like crap and really give the car a goofy look.

The C5 did a better job with the lights on look than the C4, but I say if the C6 design team can integrate fixed lights into the design and do it tastefully, go for it.

I will vote, but I have to do some serious thinking on the subject.

Although I have never owed a Corvette, my Dad used to have a C4 and, as mentioned above, in the day time, it looked awesome. At night, it didn't quite have the same dynamic look.

The pop-ups have been a long tradition and seem to go hand in hand with the Corvette, so from that view, there would be a touch of melancholy to lose them. However, they have not always been there.

This is a tough call.

I hate to not vote.

Jeff

You guys bring up an interesting point about the look when they are up...

But, what if they went to a 'shuttered' design where a body colored piece 'slid' over the fixed, composite headlight.... then you have the best of both worlds!

I swear to God I was going to suggest that same idea but didn't mention it. I would be fine with that method!

man, the last time I saw that was on an old camaro SS. They've been out of commission for sometime now. MY opinions on the situation are this (keep in mind I own a camaro): The less moving parts, the better. More room, and less "stuff to fix". Vettes are generally owned by older men, so the less factors for potential problems makes them happy they spent so much money. I'm confident chevy's thought this out, and brought up all these point, and like we're finding out, the public doesnt really care either way how they go. Non pop up is just more practical. But a car with hidden lights does look good, in the day time at least. I wonder if they could make a "shutter" design to help blend the lights in.

Pop-ups tend to make the car look dated.

Kill the pop-ups! Just another moving part to fix at some point. (And this is coming from a guy that loves Gen-I RS Camaros.)

Hmmmmm, this is a really close poll.

Me, I like C4's and C5's, so I like the concealed look. But like others have said before, when they are up they look kinda wierd. If they could make the actual lights smaller and only need to raise up a little bit to let them out, it might look better. What about some Lamborghini type headlights??

For me being the Corvette fanatic that I am its kinda strange that this isn't that big of an issue to me. I like pop up headlights, but after having issues with them on both of my Firebirds, realize they can be more trouble then there worth. I'm also curious to see what the Corvette design team can come up with using the exposed head lamps.

Either way the C6 will be an awesome car regardless of which style is used.

I've gotta agree with WERM, pop-ups make a car look dated and I want the C6 to sell like crazy, so no pop-ups. I like the non pop-up look more anyways.

My Dad owns a 63 Corvette and a 95 Corvette (He sold his 70 vette). He likes the pop-up headlights, and thinks they are a signature Corvette feature.

I'd have to agree. The headlights aren't history, they are tradition.
