BREAKING: House passes 'cash for clunkers' legislation

Not really important. Any car eligible for this program is automatically worth no less than 3,500 dollars in the eyes of the person getting rid of it. If they're already in the market for a new car, rather than selling the old one for two grand, they can trade it in for potentially more than twice as much.

I think this bill helps the enthusiast. I can buy this $500 Isuzu and get a $4500 credit towards a brand new Camaro.
Like I said before, no one is dumb enough to trade in a classic car for this program, it will be mostly all 80's and 90's SUVs and pickups that are already on their death bed.
They wouldn't qualify unless you are trading for a Fusion hybrid or something. 1998 Corvette has the LS1 and would be worth a lot more than $4500

And we still pay for it. Nothing is free, and short-term gain now will have to be paid back at some point....usually in spades.

I am enthusiast, but I also have principles - and I'm not willing to give up those principles just because this may be good for a hobby that I enjoy.

There are many out there that would take the $4500 rather than hassle with selling the vehicle.

You apparently don't realize the benefits from this. They are projecting an increase of 1 MILLION new car sales in a market experiencing less than 10 million. Thats a 10% increase! This creates and KEEPS jobs for a big chunk of the population plus is good for the environment.
And who is "they"? The same folks that back in Feb said that unemployment wasn't going to get over 8% so long as we spent more stimulus money quicker?

Fortunately you're not the decision maker and we obviously have differen't opinions on this matter & I for one hope it works! Already has in Germany & a few other countries with similar concepts.

It still helps, though.

Yes, fortunately my vote counts just as much as yours. Germany? A wonderful socialist-leaning country to emulate.

The hope is the Act will increase new vehicle sales by one million units in the first year
Your vote counts, but mine will only cancel yours out. So in theory neither one counts.

The hope is the Act will increase new vehicle sales by one million units in the first year at a time when the market is expected to experience sales of less than 10 million.
In all seriousness, the idea is fine, but I disagree completely with my tax money being used for this. Sorry. Like we both said....I guess we're cancelled out.

It would seem to me that IF the goal was really to stimulate automotive sales, there wouldn't be a stipulation that only older cars that get at or below 'x' miles per gallon are eligible to trade in this program. I see this as nothing more than a cleverly-veiled environmentalist bill, aimed at a "certain type" of vehicle, funded by taxpayer dollars.
But I suppose I am not as "enlightened" as others.

No, now suddenly it's a $3500 steal!
