Well now it seems used cars won't be able to be touched for under 3,500 dollars.

This is fantastic for cars like the Fusion and Escape hybrids.

I imagine it will also take a lot of early 90's SUVs and trucks off the road since they are at the other end of the spectrum.

Your Avalanche is probably worth more than $4500. You know they crush the car you trade in.

They will get a lot of it back in sales tax. $30,000 car brings in $2,475 worth of sales tax.

Look at it as your federal tax dollars being transferred to your state and county gov't were it can be put to better use.

A car hobby is a luxury. They should not be subsidizing peoples luxuries.

So is the 18MPG combined the maximum or is that just being used for an example?

They are subsidizing the auto industry. Although like I said, the majority of the money will come back in sales tax, and then of course less gas consumed means cheaper prices for all of us.

But someone STILL HAS TO PAY FOR IT at the Federal level! I look at it as another stupid gov't spending program that is going to do little but put us further in debt.

Sorry.

I'm not asking anyone to subsidize my hobby. I just resent having MY tax dollars used to subsidize the destruction of my hobby.

Not to mention several other industries as well, from the suppliers to the bank that finance the vehicle bought. This keeps EVERYTHING going. Especially since a majority of these sales wouldn't have happened otherwise.

Sorry.
It could end up being revenue neutral after sales tax, income tax for workers, etc.. If this helps sell 100,000 cars that is a lot of man hours that will be taxed at 25%+. Also who get the money from the scrapped cars?

Is your hobby collecting $1000 rusted out pickup trucks? It is not like anyone is trading in a 69 Camaro ZL1 for a Cobalt XFE.

18mpg is the max, anything with a "combined" of 19 or higher you get nothing. (as the bill currently sits) this could change.

The 18 mpg really eliminates a lot of older cars unless it is a v-8 sports car, truck or SUV.

ZL1's are out of my league. But I bought a clean, rust free, original 3rd gen last year, for less money than it would be worth had it been junked in exchange for a new Kia, according to this bill.

I think you're being very optimistic. I see it as another reason to find something else to tax to raise money for the feds. How about a Federal sales tax? Was in the news recently. That would bring some of the money back to the Federal Treasury....

Once again - no thanks. More of the Nannie State trying to tell me what's best for me....and using my money to do it.

Yep, just another excuse for the government to reach even further into our lives.

I wish they would pass the Fair Tax, that has been talked about for years, I just don't see it happening.
