BMW recalls 150,000 vehicles for airbag sensor fix
"BMW will recall around 150,000 vehicles in North America to fix a possible defect that may keep the front passenger airbag from opening in a crash, the world's biggest premium carmaker said on Thursday. "
"BMW will recall around 150,000 vehicles in North America to fix a possible defect that may keep the front passenger airbag from opening in a crash, the world's biggest premium carmaker said on Thursday. "
"Models affected include certain 2006 3-Series, 2004-06 5-Series and 2004-06 X3 vehicles."
"BMW said it would start sending letters to customers in late September and that affected owners could continue to drive their vehicles unless the airbag warning lamp and the passenger airbag 'on-off' lamp illuminated simultaneously."
Kudos to BMW for doing the recall voluntarilly.
A black eye in a good fight can be worn with dignity.
I predict that as we see more sensors and electronics go into cars (especially as hybrids and electrics proliferate) we will see correspondingly more recalls for things of this nature. In industry, we often see birth or infancy failures of electrical components - it's disheartening. I recently ordered 24 sets of light curtains from a supplier and could not get any of them to work - right out of the box. After much haggling on the phone and finally getting a rep to bring some spare ones to theplant, we got the new set to work right out of the box. They blamed us for bad circuit design, wiring, grounding - you name it... until we plugged in their "new" set that was months older due to sitting on a shelf in a warehouse. TURNS OUT - there was a bad batch of diodes sent to them from their supplier in Taiwan... they were all automatically stitched and soldered into the control IC board, passed continuity checks, but failed under voltage. This led to a recall of all units made with a certain date code... which included all 24 of mine.
Be interesting to keep our eyes on future recalls and problems and see just how much the pendulum swings towards electrical issues and away from mechanical ones... methinks.
