Big Saturn VUE recall.

from The Car Connection:
Saturn VUE in Big Recall

Nearly 250,000 of Saturn's VUE SUVs will be recalled to fix a suspension problem that could cause a rollover if a driver makes an emergency maneuver. The defect was discovered during tests by the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration. The sport-utility vehicle's rear suspension failed during two separate rollover tests. The vehicles were put through maneuvers in which they were subject to sharp turns at 45 mph. In both cases, a wheel collapsed. Following a speech to the Management Briefing Seminars, General Motors Corp.'s Chief Financial Officer, John Devine, said owners will be asked to return their vehicles to dealers to have the rear suspensions modified. A total of 246,433 Saturn utes are involved. Devine said he did not know how much the recall would cost the automaker, but stressed that "Rather than talk about it, we'd rather fix it." It's not the first problem for Saturn's first sport-ute, which was launched in 2002. The automaker was forced to drop a fuel-efficient continuously variable transmission, or CVT, when it failed to meet durability requirements.
I notice that Equinox is NOT mentioned... I assumed the suspension setups would be the same since both are on the Theta Platform???

Not neccesarily...Equinox suspension is slightly different mostly due to the longer length.

Ya, I'm glad they are addressing it too...

Still, it's upsetting that it made production this way, though it did take 2- 2 1/2 years after it's launch to discover the problem anyway...

Actually if you read a real financial newspaper like the Wall Street Journal, this has been an issue for some time. After multiple accidents they came under scrutiny of the NHSA. Believe me, no auto manuf wants to recall a vehicle, they had to.

Saturn is turning out to be the Mitsu of GM. too bad GM can't just "cut ties" too.

Re: Big Saturn VUE recall.

duh, look at how many resources and how much "fanfare" that operation took up. DC comes out POSITIVE separating itself from Mitsu in the short term, which is just the opposite for GM and Olds. it'll be another 5 years at least before we see another closure of GM's brands and I'm afraid it might be SAAB or Buick before Saturn. I mean, isn't it true you can STILL buy a new Olds today, 4 years after the brand was "retired"? that means the whole process isn't even final yet. on top of that, Saturn is the least destinctive and has the least history and purpose than pretty much everything else GM has yet it endures.

Why do you say that? Saturns are very good cars for the most part. I have had 4 myself, all with over 100,xxx miles on them and I worked there for almost 2 years. My current one has 150,xxx and it runs better than most cars out there with 150,xxx on them even them *** pieces of $h!t. It is a good car company overall, every car has its problems, so I would not just dislike saturns. If you have not owned one then I would not say what they are without having one. Some of the newer models do have problems, just like every new model that comes out, but overall they are good cars.

There are still clowns crying over Olds.

Sad thing is the name had nothing going for it. They rebuilt the brand with nice looking cars, and they still didn't sell because buyers didn't see themselves in Oldsmobiles.

To be honest, if GM had axed Old's from the beginning and put the importish lineup they developed for Olds in Saturn dealers things would have went much better. There the buyers are not typical GM buyers......and they would have seen the cars Old's got in the end as cool.

Car brands are like any other brand, they run their course over time and if mismanaged, need to be drastically changed or replaced.

I'll tell you why I don't agree.

If you look at the position that Cadillac was in before the ground breaking CTS, STS, and SRX, you'll see that the perception of Cadillac was no better than Oldsmobile. Had the same effort been put into Oldsmobile (RWD), along with a better marketing campaign (their's was a terrible waist) and some Olds specific products (beyond the 3.5 V6 and 4.0 V8), I very much could have seen a highly successful Oldsmobile.

Re: Big Saturn VUE recall.

Yes...but would GM have had it easier if they created a new brand with quality cars, and did not have to "convince" everyone that the new cars are great...."for a Cadillac"..

Though we all don't want to see a brand like Cadillac go anywhere....sometimes there are harsh business realities.

I will admit that in the auto industry brand loyalty runs deeper than other industries....

Sony renamed a line of Camera's people wouldn't whine all over the place like they did over olds.

Re: Big Saturn VUE recall.

Oldsmobile's two biggest problems were:

1) Buick. The products of Olds and Buick were too similar... and even though, IMO, Olds had the better product in the end... more elderly folks stuck with the drab Buicks than went with the better styled Olds'... and Buick outsold Olds, therefore Olds got the boot.

2) OLDsmobile. It's sad, but I really think that the name OLDsmobile was a hinderance in the end... it's hard, in today's market, to get YOUNGer people to buy something that says OLD right in the very brand name.
