Another Mustang Ad Taking Jabs at Camaro...

I didn't see anything about this on the first three pages, but I thought it was funny.

I'm reading through Maxim at work, and I see a full page Mustang GT with this text:

THEY DON'T MAKE CARS LIKE THEY USED TO. WE DO. FORD MUSTANG.

I thought it was clever, just seems like a general comment but there's obviously a jab at the Camaro between the lines.

All I know is that every month I like Ford more and more.

In the 2002 Camaro brochure there's a picture that takes a jab at the fact that Ford ended the special service (Police package) Mustang when it went to the SN95 structure.

It has a picture of a Camaro police car that pulled over a Mustang.

If you really want to here some really good chiding, look up some of the things John Colletti (SVT Boss at Ford, and key guy that saved Mustang back in the early '90s) has said about GM's decision to drop Camaro.

Be sure to sit down for some of them.... they're pretty ballsy!

The Camaro pulling over the SN95 picture was in the 2000 brochure as well.

I like how they go at each other, but I think F*rd just looks stupid doing it most of the time because they usually can't back up what they say.

The sad part is, that's not the case at all. The ad says it all...Ford is still making cars "like they used to"...Chevy...isn't.

Well, the car isn't in production anymore. They can talk all they want now and it means nothing. I wanna hear their ads when Camaros are once again showing them Chevy taillights while their cars are getting recalled.

But honestly, I'm glad. They are still making their musclecar and I hope it and their ads makes GM's want for the 5th Gen more and realize how stupid this whole thing is.

I think they are following the "if you got it flaunt it" philosophy. And good for them maybe it will light a fire under someone's butt at GM. I know it is coming I just want to know NOW!!!

FoMoCo can crow now; but they weren't doing much crowing when they were going head-to-head with the LS1...But in the long run, I think GM's competition with just one car was part of the f-body's undoing...When the camaro comes back, I'd like to see a more versatile vehicle that can compete with every car in it's class, instead of just having a single-minded purpose.

What EVERYBODY keeps forgetting (or never understood to begin with) is that Ford does not want the Mustang to be the fastest car around - FROM THE FACTORY. They want you to buy the basic platform, and make it as fast as you want it ... YOURSELF. That's why there's all the aftermarket support, that's why FRPP is so lucrative, that's why the GT remains at the power it has been at for so long, that's why the 5.0 platform was relatively unchanged for 6 years, and so on. There's a decent amount of published data about just this topic - where Ford claims that they didn't want to alienate female buyers, they didn't want (already high) insuance rates to go ballistic, they didn't want the car's prices to jump for engine development, etc. They really took the approach of conceeding the one battle (the fastest car from the factory in this case) in order to help win the war (the car is alive and prospering at this time while the faster factory car is DOA). Slick move in hindsight, and they have had burning ears for 10 years because of that decision back then, but it WAS the right one IMO.

As for not doing much crowing while battling the LS1s...
ONLY if you are a competitive guy would you complain about the LS1 beating you in the 1/4 or on the street, and if you are a competitive guy, you are not likely to leave your car in "as-factory-built" condition for long. The basic GT on giggle-gas or an iron lung is more than a handful for the LS1, given equal talents AND equal $$$ - my time at Farmington dragway and Piedmont raceway has shown me this frequently. And don't even think about the claim,"well let me mod my LS1 and we'll see..." because the LS1 cars I've seen DID have mods too... from the infamous lid all the way up to the 75-shot of giggle-gas.

Remember, Ford has positioned the COBRA to be the top dog, not the GT. Now there may be some guys in '98 Cobras that have a complaint about minor butt-whoopins from the LS1 that have a point. And to be sure, the LS1 WAS the faster car in stock trim over any Mustang GT in stock trim, but for the most part the 320hp Cobras and the LS1 cars are pretty equal, and it comes down to driver ability to pull out the victory. Overall, neither camp really has anything to be ashamed of IMO.

As for the advertising... well what can I say. I guess it's too late to show an SSP pulling over an IROC, huh? J/K!

On another note, anybody see the new Armor-All commercial with the black F2 in it this weekend? Nice commercial... nice car. I think it is a Z/28 car, but I didn't get a chance to review the grill before the commercial ended.

In development, the supercharged Cobra was nicknamed "Terminator". The reason was because it was to terminate all discussion as to who had the quickest car between Mustang and Camaro.

Mach1 Mustangs are as quick as LS1 F-bodies.

If the Camaro had continued for another year, or until it was replaced, I really wonder how many same-price-as-Cobra Camaro SSs or WS6 Trans Ams GM would have sold, if Ford would have made more than 7,000 Mach1s (which are priced about the same as a loaded Z28 or well optioned Trans Am).

If Camaro had continued, we'd no doubt be underdog in the "stoplight racer" catagory today.

I recently looked at a 2003 Mach 1 and it looked fast and awesome. If I were in the money to afford a new car, the Mach 1 would be my choice, being Chevrolet doesnt make anything I like right now. I hope the big boys from GM read these posts!

I'm sure GM will get back in the game. Honestly i don't mind the BS ad's from Ford making the public think the mustang is the best of the best. Ford will in turn cause the 5th gen f-body, like the f-body caused the 03 Cobra.
GM is not down and out of the race like that **** colleti would have everyone believe.
