Aluminum frame Corvettes

We've heard the rumors about special edition Vettes getting aluminum frames. Well, this was posted to the local board the other day.

I work at Dana and I hear what other Dana factorys are doing. The one in Kentucky makes the Corvette frames and I heard that 3000 special Corvettes will be getting an all aluminium frame. They have already made some. One person can pick one up, easy.

Re: Aluminum frame Corvettes

Does anyone know approximately how much weight is saved from the aluminum vs. steel?

considering that even a Lotus elise's frame weighs 150 pounds, if they really mean the easy part of that picking up bit, then thats DAMN impressive

I'm sure different alloys have different weights.

If it is being made in KY then I bet my mom is making some of the aluminum for the frames. She works for Century Aluminum in Hancock county. That is pretty cool I may have to have her ask if Dana has placed any Big orders for aluminum. Although I do have to wonder why Alcoa, in southern IN, didn't get the call they did some of the 1st alum. LS1 engines for GM.

GM's EV1 had an aluminum chassis and the weight reduction was around 210 pounds less than a steel chassis (believe it was 40% lighter). The ev1 website isnt up anymore. Corvette weight reduction may be less since I believe some of the structure is already made out of lighter materials.

Re: Aluminum frame Corvettes

I will let the cat out of the bag now.
I just got news from someone off GMI that he has seen, touched, and picked up one of 14 all aluminum corvette chassis. He said it looks exactly like the C6's frame, just all aluminum. Whatever it is, they have made 14 of them, so I assue its either the Z06, or perhaps the Blue Devil?

p.s. he said that it was so light, that he could pick it up by himself.

Re: Aluminum frame Corvettes

I would think that an aluminum chassis would drive teh cost of the Z06 north of 60k.
Unique, hand built engine
All aluminum chassis
6spd manumatic trans
CF body pannels...yeah, I wouldnt be surprised to see this above 65k.
