all I know...

all i know...

I need new wheels to replace my aging z28, I am getting married and would like to buy a house. Now, I cannot afford a vette, nor does the the GTO appeal to me in any fashion at 33k geez 4 more and I could get a vette.

With that being said, I ask the board gurus Red Planet and Qguino (sorry, forgot the name you know who you are) the million dollar question, I like performance and have @26k for a new car. FWD is not an option.

How about a Saab 9-2 (Saab is 100% GM owned) or the Subaru WRX that it is based off of (Fuji Heavy Industries is 20% owned by GM)?

That's the closest thing I could think of...

Not much from the GM camp in that department right now. If you include Saab, the new 9-2X qualifies as well as the Pontiac Solstice next fall (and awd G6).

If you are considering used, you have C5 Vettes and f-bodies.

While Subaru is 20% owned by GM, GM has no say in the operations of Subaru. That being said, I have a WRX and like it very much. I went on a trip just recently and got 28 mpg and the car is two years old (I'm slightly modded as well). The four doors are really convenient. Insurance is $258 cheaper than Mustang GT every six months (in Houston). I'm also buying a house. I was really really close to buying a S2000 or Cobra, but the house seems the better deal

I have to agree with the WRX. My younger brother has one and loves it.

If you are dead set on a GM car and rwd for around 26K, then you really have only one choice: a used Cadillac CTS. It's about 1980s-style quick, so if you've driven an IROC or 5.0 Mustang with an automatic, the used CTS should do just fine.

If you want something new from GM for that price that's rwd, then you may as well go looking for Elvis, Bigfoot, and the Loch Ness Monster in your back yard, because you'll have better success.

For new rear drive cars under 30, you have to abandon the General:
*Lexus IS300 with a 6 speed is $29K
*Infinity G35 sedan w/ 260 horses is $28,700 (the coupe now starts at 30K)
*Chrysler 300 w/ the 250 horse V6 starts at $27K without discounts (with incentives you can get a "C" down to at least $30K)
*Current Mustang GTs are going for near firesale prices (save the Cobra). We're talking low 20s here.

Otherwise, were talking used Lincoln LS V8s, used BMW 3 series, if you're keeping it within the past few years.

With those few of miles it might be about that price. I saw a new, yes new, 2002 SS at a dealer recently and they still wanted low $30's for it!

I believe his idea is to replace or add an additional car to the Z28 he already has, not subsituting one 4th gen with another.

Is there really a point trading in one paid for & owned 4th gen Z28, just to go into debt for the next 5 years all over again for another that looks the same and is barely half a second quicker to 60?

Re: all I know...

Have you considered a truck? There are usually a bunch on dealer lots. I'm betting there are some real discounts out there and who knows, you might even come in under the $26k. The gas mileage probably sucks though...

Gracias everyone, I think maybe I should look at a truck. The avalanche might be the way to go z66 style, they are running some good rebates now. Although ga$$$...The WRX is probally the best economical preformer out there now.

I am starting an expedition to the yukon in search of the sasquash or otherwise known as Bigfoot, aka the rwd v8 made by the general. ~

guionM you can bring the beer and the camera, we'll be back in 07' with pics.
