'99 GTO Concept or upcoming GTO?
Just curious as to which of the "new" GTOs you like more...
I personally liked the '99 concept the moment I saw it... the new '04 has REALLY had to grow on me, though it's starting to...

I loved it. Muscular lines, grooves, and bulges, cool rims (sorta) and nice azz shot. It had that muscular yet edgy look which I love. I think the production version (toned down a little bit) would have looked way better than the actual GTO we're getting now IMHO.
The 99's sharp, angular lines look like they can be used as
knives..
Needless to say, I like it, but it would've needed some work. By the way, what platform was this car built on?
The current GTO is okay too. Either one would have worked.

My impression was that the '99 concept was just ghastly.
The designer ,(by his own admission), didn't even know what a GTO was, until he started the project.

! That car is the very definition of over styled , not to mention bad taste. It's always better to understyle a car than over style it (you can always add items... rims, scoops, etc... to bring it up), and that car was over the top!
The interview with the designer was a joke. Not only did he not know anything about what a GTO was, he wasn't very much into car history at all. He basically was just an industrial design student who happened to end up at a car company.
What's really even more ghastly than it's design or the fact the designer had no knowledge of GTO (and probally could care less if it was FWD) is that any GTO enthusiast at all fell for that car.
Back in 99 when I first saw it, I thought it was horrible, way too batmobile-esque. After 4 years, I still think it's way too over the top - and horrible.
The concept is ostentatious where the original was not. GTOs were built on pretty mundane but classy cars. If you think about it, GTOs never, ever sported the most outrageous styling, hood scoops or wings - Mopar cars did. Other than the hood-mounted tachs and the Judge stripes of the 70-71 model years, GTOs remained very pedestrian (if very attractive) looking cars. It was the balanced driving experience/muscle car execution that set them apart.
I for one, am glad the 99 concept has not surfaced as a production model. But then again, here in Canada there is no 04 Monaro-based GTO either, which for practical purposes, makes the 04 almost as unobtainable as the 99 concept. That said, I do like the GTO/Monaro. I think it's every bit as understated (or is that anonymous?) as the original - even if it is currently lacking throwback styling cues like hood scoops.

For some reason the 99 concept reminds me of the Aztek. The 04 is cool looking especially in black. Alot of people that post here are against "retro" styling, so why is everyone complaining about the fact that the 04 doesn't have any of the previous GTO 's styling cues. This is a nice fresh design (at least here). The only thing I don't like is the rear of the GTO and the fact that it doesn't have a dual exhaust. I believe that if something isn't functional, it doesn't belong there (hood scoops).
