Re: 7 speed manual for vette?

I saw a similar article last week. I am happy for it...

Now you can have your close ratio box for when you want to go fast, and still have that tall overdrive for the highway.

I would really like to see a dual clutch sequential transmission in the Vette... maybe one day.

I would hold out for the 25 speed gearbox...

I was wondering how long it would take for this to get out.

Re: 7 speed manual for vette?

Yeah it makes sense for Porsche somewhat in that they are dealing with a 3.4 and 3.8L engine... which are rumored to be downsized again over the next couple of years.

What I find odd is you had something like the T56 that had 2 overdrives. Was it really too much of a jump to go from something like 1:1 in 5th to ~.60 in a 6th? Why can't they just optimize the ratios that they already have?

Personally I think this is just a waste, but I suppose I will reserve final judgement until the ratios are revealed and the performance of the next Vette is revealed. It would be nicer for them to work on a DSG than an extra gear in a traditional manual.

I hope 7 is geared really tall. Like a use only at 75mph type of gear.

It think this is good. It makes the Vette stand out now that even a Sonic has a 6 speed manual.

I'd like to see a DSG for the auto. One of the many reasons the GTR is as fast as it is is because of the extremely quick gear changes.

The C6 LS2 had a 186mph top speed. Could this mean the C7 could be in the prestigious 200mph club?

I don't think it's a bad idea. I swear I sometimes reach down to shift my GTO into 7th sometimes when I am cruising at a good clip on the highway . It would probably help the mileage some.

I'm of the same mindset. Why not optimize the gears we already have.

I really don't see the need for 7 gears being that the only time I used 6th in my 97 was when I settled in on the freeway, going to be on there a while, and was doing over 70.

I too will reserve final judgement till it comes out, but I'm still not quite on board.

If it turns out to be better, I'm all for it. I imagine the Corvette engineers are smart enough to figure out if the 7 speed would offer advantages over a 6 speed.

Yeah, gotta see how its geared, I've always thought it would be neat to have a trans that was almost idealy geared for economy, terminal velocity and acceleration with little or no compromise.

Then again on an unrelated note, people seem obssessed with the latest and greatest gadget, I'm sure at some point if every other manufacturer with a sportscar is going to a 7 speed manual with thier .5 liter powerplants then you'll hear someone complain that the vette needs to get with program (or they wont buy one) even if its got an engine 10 times the size and could accomplish the same with half the gears.

Its all about the bench-racing and the size of your E-*****.

The problem there was that the .5 overdrive ratio in the T-56 was just too tall for anything except going 70 on the highway. If you went to a 7 speed gearbox, they wouldn't make an even taller 7th gear, they would make 7th gear equivalent to the 6th gear in your current gearbox, and space gears 1-6 tighter for better acceleration, giving the car more flexibility to have an optimal gear for any speed.

If all you are going to use your car for is commuting, there's nothing that will stop you from skipping gears if you choose to do so. Shift 1-3-5-7 or whatever order you want....

For example:
6th gear in the ZR1's close ratio transmission is .67 vs .5 in your F-body's T-56 transmission. That 35% more rpm if you were to swap the transmissions, not to mention first gear is taller as well (2.66 in the T-56 s 2.21 in the TR6060). You'd probably be disappointed with the performance of your Z if you installed ZR1 equivalent gears in your car's transmission.

I've also heard people complain about a weight penalty associated with such a transmission... An extra gear is not going to add sizeable mass to the transmission.

Re: 7 speed manual for vette?

You would not be disappointed in your Z06 with the ZR gearing. Especially if you do standing mile stuff since the drop to 5th gear in the Z06 is bad.

Additionally, having a taller first gear isn't going to hurt you all that much when you are hugely traction limited anyway.

Interestingly enough, 2012 ZR's get different ratios depending on if you get the performance package or not. Base ZR's mpg gets bumped up to 22 hwy and guzzler tax is down to only $1000.
