Gm, will you have something to compete with this?

I say it's accurate to assume that all major manufacturers are going to have diesel offerings like Honda is doing although I don't know who has/will have the "best" diesel.

Tom T. on "America's Car Show" last weekend was praising the new Jeep with a turbo diesel he was driving (not available for the public yet)...I'd say some good things are coming.

"Somebody" on this board has been praising diesels in "sporty" cars for a LONG time.
That same "somebody" has also been begging for the US to do some cars like those in Europe for a LONG time - like YEARS long.
"Somebody" on this board has repeatedly crowed about the mileage AND performance that he has personally experienced in such cars.

Somebody inside Ford or GM apparently ought to give that other "somebody" a big job making product development decisions for them.

And more to the point - yes, there are good diesels coming, just not as good as that Accord or quite as soon as I'd like to see it happen.

GM has some great new Diesels too. I can't wait to see how a the 2.9L V6 does. If Jon Moss was still around I could see him building a 4.5L Diesel V8 Camaro, 520tq

It's been out in Europe since 2003. I've always wished Honda would bring it here.

I'd rather drive that than any hybrid.

I'd bet that this will be a 4 cylinder diesel if it is going to get numbers like that (especially since the car in that picture is a Euro Accord, which is probably only available with a 4 cylinder).

GM has shown the 2.9L V6 turbodiesel, and I would assume that it will propogate through the lineup. I wouldn't be surprised to see fuel economy in the 40s for that engine, and probably with more impressive performance than the 4 cylinder in the Honda. Just speculation at this point, though.

I would think that to get a rating of 62 mpg (if that is the actual capability), that is a smallish 4 cylinder turbo diesel, in a car that is larger than a Jetta TDI...

I wouldn't expect a 250 hp / 400 lb-ft engine in that Accord to get those sorts of numbers.

But yes, it would be nice if there were also a 4 cylinder turbo diesel option for the Malibu, Aura, etc. that could get into the 50s+ mpg...

Story: A diesel Honda? That gets 62.8 miles a gallon?
I find it hard to believe that, that Accord can get 62.8 MPG. Currently, that Accord sells in UK with a 2.2L i-CTDI (diesel engine) which can attain 52.3 MPG combined.

Now 52.3 MPG is based on Imperial gallons which is 1.2 US Gallons. Now to convert that number to US gallons, you should do 52.3/1.2 = 43.6. Now if you do the opposite and do 52.3 * 1.2, you get 62.76 which rounds to 62.8 MPG.

Coincidence that this new car gets exactly 62.8 MPG, a 44% increase in mileage, when announced in the US market? I think not"

52Mpg seems more like it.

not that hard to believe

Actually, it's possible for it to have 60 mpg on the highway. It works out to be about 4.5L per 100 km, something that VW's Golf TDi was rated at (current models excluding).

Rememter, this is highway driving.

City, VW rated their cars at about 5.5L / 100 km, which works out to be 52 mpg.

Thanks for posting this. I was wondering in the back of my head if there was not a Euro vs. U.S. conversion error in play, because that number sounded a bit too good to be true.

Yes. But the golf is a much lighter car. Weight kills.

I don't care if it gets 50 or 60mpg... one is better than the other, but both are great.

I really wish it was going to be available by the time my lease goes up this fall, though.

In addition, this is the European Accord, which is sold here as the Acura TSX. One size class down from the U.S. Accord; about the same size as our Civic.

I was surprised to see how big the Civic became, almost the size of the TSX.

Length (in.) 176.7 / 183.5 / 191.1

As noted, this has been available in Europe for years. Probably an update of the tech featured here-
http://world.honda.com/HDTV/news/200..._1a/index.html

No frickin' way that's getting 62mpg in an American-market Accord. I don't think high 40s are out of the question, though.
I wish I could have bought this car last year, as it sits- a TSX with the 2.2l diesel.
