5th Gen weight?

I've seen a lot of threads about options, engines, etc, but I'm curious what you all think the new Camaro will weigh. Quick in a straight line os all well and good but I like the twisities too. The GTO is a bit porky for my liking, and if given the choice I'd rather give up a bit of (stock) power for the chance to shed some poundage. Its easy enough to get those ponies back.

Hey Choc, you might wanna do a search on this topic. It has been the source of some long threads and heated debate.

It sounds like it is going to end up weighing more than many of us on this board would like. Especially if some of the guys on this board get their way and the new Camaro gets every option available to it that a Cadillac does.

Because weight effects every performance aspect of the car. Not all of us are satisfied with just cruising around on a Sunday afternoon in our Camaros, showing them off. Some of us actually care how the Camaro will perform.

To be honest with some of the meaningless arguments I’ve had in here in the last few days I don’t really care anymore.

At the end of the day we are still arguing over a car that doesn’t really even exist yet.

I think I might just go back into lurk mode until I see the 5th gen concept in person in Dallas.

Re: 5th Gen weight?

It will weigh whatever it weighs. Personally, I have an "obsession" with weight because weight is the enemy of performance (every benchmark), economy, and efficiency.

Then again, why would those things matter in a performance car?

Re: 5th Gen weight?

Weight is important to me also as 3800* won't lend it to good numbers.Give me 3300* and I'll throw the jack/spare in the corner of the garage.

That about sums it up.
3650 is fine, I just want it ROCK SOLID, tight wound, confidence inspiring!...if it take 50# more to do, I can live with it.

I'd say you're probably right. For reference, that is about the same weight as an 03/04 Cobra (that had an iron block, big 4V heads, a blower, and all the stuff that goes along with it).

Re: 5th Gen weight?

I think it will be about 200-300 pounds heavier than what the 4th gen weighed in at. So the base would start at about 3700-3800 pounds.

I would say this mainly from looking at what new government mandated safety features would be on new cars, also what new safety features would come into effect 1-2 years after production is actually started. It would cost GM a lot to just have to re-engineer a car after 1-2 years of production, just because of a few mandated safety features. Also if you look at the auto industry there seems to be a trend toward heavier vehicles. I think this is because of government crash standards and safety features.

Also it seems like the manufactures are doing nothing to address this issue. Sure GM did weight reduction and engineering on the Vette and ZO6, but that is only one car and it’s their halo sports car at that. What I would like to see is the manufactures make a concerted effort to reduce vehicle weight across the board for all vehicles. This would reduce the emissions of the vehicle and also make it feel sportier because of the reduced weight.

Then there is the options issue. Well I’ll just say that there are some options that I could live with out and then there are options that I gotta have. Which all affect the weight of the vehicle.
