5th gen t-tops idea

i've been thinking on this one for a little bit...

how about keyless lockable t-tops?
don't ask me how this would come about because i'm not an engineer nor do i claim to be
i know this seems weird but what if...
you could throw the t-tops on and lock them with the flick of a switch? and unlock right away when you go to take them off?
i know i lock mine everytime since 1 of mine flew off on the highway (just gives me a feelign of extra security and makes sure i know they're latched now)
i'm not sure how it would work since it seems that the lock differs from a standard door lock but..
feel free to discuss, critique, analyze, whatever..
i'd like to see some opinions on this

Perhaps some sort of small magnetic contact like the XLR and C6 doors? It would be easier to operate and probably simplier to mfg.

First I will say, that I have not put a T-top on and not latched it (how could anybody do that???).
Second, I feal much more comfortable closing the latched with the lever, knowing it is locked closed. Instead of reliying on a magnet, and hoping it was working properly.

From a product designer's point of view I can completely understand that opinion and the perception of not using some sort of mechanical lever.

I wonder how GM got over such negative perception with their doors?

So the XLR and C6 use a magnet instead of a latch to lock the doors? Is this defiantly going to be on production models?

I'm more than certain that's how it works, or there's a magnetic servo that engages the latch.

Note on all the C6 interior pics there's no latch handle, but a small button on the verticle part of the arm rest just before it bends upward. Press this and you discengage the magnetic latch. Likewise on the outside you press a membrane witch with two fingers to open the door.

I have no problem with the current system. Maybe the door ajar light should blink if the tops arn't latched

I think they could put a 'roof panel ajar' or 'roof' light on the dash, or maybe even a LED by the locking mech. Maybe it would blink fast 3-4 times to indicate it's secure?

Just brainstorming out loud.

So your friend put on one of your tops on your car. There is an easy way to make sure they are closed properly, do it yourself.
Dont take it too hard, I'm not "ripping" on you. When when those tops cost $1000.00 a peice (from GM) I'll be the one handeling them.

trust me, i'm the only one who goes near my t-tops now
i also think the "roof panel ajar" light would be beneficial

That would be a good idea, no matter what kind of latch it had.

Good ideas in here. Something for T-Tops like that should be made.

Instead or or in addition to the light, what if there was some sort of auditory feed back, like a 'clunk' or something so you knew it was engaged and locked down?

This however would not/should not replace that age old test of pushing up on it with the palm of your hand.....

How about a Targa... you'd always have at least one side holding it.
