Camaro Will Return!
January 27, 2003 Posted: 12:20 AM PST
Rueters - Bob Lutz of General Motors announced late Friday , January 24th that the Camaro line of sports cars will return in 2005. The Camaro has a thiry-five year American muscle car heritage that came to and end last year. 2003 is the first year in thirty five years that the Camaro has no been produced. After GM had announced the dissolving of the Camaro enthusiasts across the nation spoke out and rallied. The work of these enthusiasts certainly paid off because GM was listening. Bob Lutz stated that in 2005 the Camaro will be re-released with a completly revamped design and more muscle than any one man needs. Lutz also affirmed that the price of the Camaro would stay competitive to its heritage of being an affordable sports car. When asked why the production needed to be stopped until 2005 Lutz responded, "Because we(GM) felt that the Camaro need vast improvements, so much that production needed to be stopped so we can give the project the needed time" Lutz also added, "In 2005 when the Camaro is re-released it will have been well worth the wait...we are building the Camaro now for the enthusiasts, the way they want it!". Although details on the new camaro were not confirmed, GM execs did say that the Z28 model would be discontinued for the first 2 years of production. When asked why, they responded that the SS was reintroduced to the Camaro line up back in 1996 to rekindle excitment in the Camaro and did so but the competition between the two models(Z28 and SS) was quote,"unnessisary" as enthusiasts argued that the two had almost no difference in performance and only acomplished making the Z28 look bland and boring. To solve this problem the Z28 will be reintroduced in 2007 as the special edition 40th aniversary and will be equiped with a rendition of the newly awaited LS6 motor. The new Camaro line up will consist of the base V6 Camaro with an option of the RS appearance package and the SS Camaro at a rumored 360HP. GM execs would not specify where the camaro will be built but knowing that its here to stay is more than enough comfort for many Camaro enthusiasts. Lutz closed the interview with this statement, "just kidding."
