You generally need a large engine (lots of Liters/cubic inches) to have a lot of torque. I didn't read the entire article to see how many liters the engine is, but I am going to assume less than 5L. The Ferrari 360 Modena has like 390 horsepower, but only 290 lb-ft of torque. The V-8 is only like 3.6L. Our Z28s and SSes have between 275 and 325 HP and have 300 to 350 or more lb-ft of torque.

The point is, is that Toyota CAN come out with a supercar and nobody can laugh at them or not take them seriously because of their history with the Supra.
Sorry, no reverence here for the Supra. When I go out cruising on Friday or Saturday night and look at what's at the local cruise-in's, I see Torino GT's, Stingray Corvette 427's, Trans Ams, Challengers, 5L Mustangs, and Camaros. The occasional sport import seems like a mosquito buzzing by

As for this new Toyota supercar, as usual when anyone OTHER than GM tries to put out a hi-power sports car, it's well north of $100k

at least it looks good, but I'm predicting that this will be Toyota's version of the NSX: great styling and space-age technology, decent but not ground-breaking performance numbers, and a woefully bloated price tag...
