If they *were* just badge engineered cars - wouldn't they be built on the same line?
(Malibu = Kansas City & Lake Orion plants)
(Regal = Oshawa plant)

They don't even have the same wheelbase!

The new Malibu rides on LWB EpII while Regal rides on SWB EpII.

The two ride on the same chassis but they do not have the same windshield. But that makes them better than apparently the Regal and Malibu that don't share any body panels or glass?

Nissan's FM platform was the origin of nearly half of Nissan and Infiniti's lineup - do you think that is badge engineering as well?
Actually, isn't the new Malibu on the shorter wb version? I thought that was puzzling about the new one, that it was actually shrinking in wheelbase (but not overall length, IIRC), while actually gaining more interior and trunk space by way of being wider and having a bigger boot area.

Yes, you are right. The new Malibu is on short wheelbase Ep II like the Regal. The next Impala will be on "Super Epsilon II" with the Cadillac XTS.

Epsilon is a flexible architecture. Oshawa will be building the short wheelbase Regal along with the Super Impala and XTS.

No, they aren't. VW uses platform sharing, but they don't look alike. Save for a BADGE.

You park the Regal/Malibu/Opel Insignia side by side and you can tell they are the same car. Same with the Firebird and Camaro.

Park a Sirocco and Golf next to each other or an Audi TT and Seat Leon. You can't be that dense to not see my point.

Park that Porsche Cayenne next to that VW Touareg and they are JUST as similar as the Regal and Malibu.

You can't just pick examples that only fit your argument while ignoring ones that don't.

And anyone who knows anything about cars can plainly see that the Golf and Scirocco are related just as the Passat and CC are.

I see your point plainly, I just disagree with you.

Re: 2013 Malibu front end picture leaked

"Sharing a platform" doesn't have the same meaning in 2011 as it did in 1991 or even 2001 for most manufacturers. Due to the intentionally flexible nature of newer 'global' platforms, many car companies are taking platform 'x' and making several VERY different vehicles from it. I mean vehicles that even a seasoned car reviewer wouldn't be able to tell you were related by driving them back to back.

So while we may find the Malibu and Regal are too similar, we don't know that for sure just by knowing they're both on the same 'platform'.

My 09 Aura and my coworker's '09 Malibu? Yeah... wayyyy too similar. Blind folded you could drive one car and the next and never realized you change cars. The Regal was supposed to be the new Aura so I wouldn't be surprised if it's still too similar to the Malibu. But I guess we'll find out soon enough.

And yes, Badge engineered like my WS6. VW is the best at not badge engineering.

Also, I'm pretty sure the Optima/Sonata don't even use the same windshield.
ummmmmmm no... not at all... cover up any part of those two cars and you can still tell they are different cars. What, besides the general 4 door shape, is the same on these two cars?

These are badge engineered cars:

I see alot of 2003 Chevy SS concept in the 2013 Malibu, it took things I did like and made them better, and took things I didn't like and made me like them...They need a coupe version since the Cruze isn't going to have a coupe and none of the brands have a coupe this size besides the Camaro, which I can't complain about it

Headlights, Greenhouse, A pillars, B pillars, front quarter panels, grill opening, door handles, front overhang. The side view mirrors are quite similar.

and thats without seeing the rear of the car.

Just about ever Audi looks like a rebadged VW to me. They are all FWD based cars with that jellybean styling.
