True, which is why I never go to that site.

This site seems to have the least amount of bias. All I can say is back when my stepson had a 96 Mustang GT I joined a Ford fanboy site (can't remember which one) to seek help and assistance and once they realized I was a "Chevy Man" I wasn't treated so warmly. At least not as warm as the Ford fans are treated here.

Yes, neither Camaro nor Mustang nor Challenger nor any other particular car group has a monopoly on "fan boy" sites...that much is certain.

If you don't think that a HUGE bump in power/weight will make a difference at the big end of the track, you are living in fantasy-land.

The second 1/8-mile counts too, you know. Compare the numbers for our cars, you definitely KILL me on the 1st 1/8-mile, but after that...

ZL1 should get off the line a little better due to superior weight distribution. But at the big end, there won't be any denying the GT500's 6.1 lb/hp vs. the ZL1's 7.4 lb/hp.
With 660 horses on stock tires, I think you will still be spinning them on the back half too. If you think otherwise, then you might be the one living in fantasy land. The traction control kicks on the 2-3 shift all the time in my Camaro, and I am 150 HP less.

The GT500 vs. ZL1 1/4 mile is really a race between track conditions, tires, and traction control calibration at GM and Ford. It has very little do do with actual peak horsepower.

The launch control on the '13 GT500 is supposed to be spectacular - just bring up the revvs to whatever you want, dump the clutch and hang on. Now, time will tell if it's more marketing hype than actual reality. Seems to me that cars always bog whenever you let computer nannies take control of these things but perhaps Ford has found the magic bullet.

These cars will pretty much be hooked for the back half.

They should be doing ~95mph at the 1/8-mile, 139 ft/s. 660hp at the flywheel is ~580hp at the rear wheels. Thrust at the rear wheels from 580hp at 130ft/s is:
580hp * 550 ft-lb/s / hp /139ft/s = 2295 lb. thrust

3850 lb. GT500 + driver and some gas ~4050 lb.
Acceleration = 2295 lb/4050 lb. = .57g
static load on the rear wheels = 0.45*4050 lb. = 1822 lb.
additional load from acceleration (19" c.g. height) = 4050 * .57g * 19"/107" = 409 lb.

Total load on rear wheels = 2231 lb.

To apply 2295 lb. of thrust with 2231 lb. load you'd need an effective coefficient of friction of 1.03 at rear tire contact patches. Not a problem for decently sticky tires on a decently sticky drag strip.

Cars will be hooked for the back half, GT500 will walk then run away from the ZL1. Guaranteed.

The traction control kicks on the 2-3 shift all the time in my Camaro, and I am 150 HP less.
For how long was the traction control active? Just for a moment, and not so much due to the power to the wheels as due to the discontinuity on the upshift. You were totally hooked after that instant of TC.
My car was totally hooked up in 2nd gear at the drag strip, despite having to put down more hp with way less weight on the drive wheels. It can do roll-on burnouts in 2nd on cold tires on the street, though :P

Nonsense, power/weight will be in full effect after 1/8-mile. ZL1 should have a slight advantage on the front half, GT500 will say bye-bye on the back half. GT500 will be *at least* .3 quicker and 5mph faster, probably more like 1/2-sec and 7mph.

We shall find out soon enough!

We don't need dragstrips anymore, just let Dan Baldwin work his "mathgic" on the specs and that's good enough.

Or maybe we could just run some computer simulations...

Coefficient of friction only goes from 0 to 1.00 with 1.00 meaning you have a static condition (**** ain't gonna move).

Coefficient of friction is not limited to 1.00, and 1.00 coefficient of friction does NOT mean that **** ain't gonna move. It just means that you'll have to apply more force than the object weighs to move it.

friction force = normal force * coefficient of friction

Drivetrain loss is not a linear situation. As power increases, loss % decreases.

A 1000hp car does not have 120-150hp lost in the drivetrain.

Projected rwhp for the GT500 is 590-605hp.

Exactly. There are some ZL1's dyno'ng in the 520-RWHP range, and because of this, some are decided that they are under-rated (SAE be damned) based on a 15% or 20% "correction factor".

Of course, if the 13 GT500's do indeed dyno around 600 RWHP, we'll hear the same thing from some in the Mustang crowd....

I've seen that typed on the internet before too. However ZR1 Corvettes routinely dyno at 525-545 at the rear wheels. 542.3 represents exactly a 15% loss from the S.A.E. certified 638 crank horsepower.
2009 Corvette ZR1 Hits the Dyno

Averaging the two Corvettes, you get 535 rwhp, which is on par with the 15% average loss rule of thumb. Alvin said that the stock tune was pretty rich as well as the fact that once the engines loosen up after a few thousand miles they will usually provide a higher base number.

Some are happier than others....

Some not so much I guess.

Nope.

12% loss.

Yes a 1000 hp car at full throttle full load is burning up about 120-150hp through the drivetrain. Ever wonder why NASCRAP has rear diff coolers?

It isn't a percentage.

But people like simple math, especially when it shows their car is more powerful than they thought.

Meanwhile a better question is "what is the certainty of a chassis dyno and what correction factors or other numbers did the operator input?"
