Yeah that does seem wierd, especially when the domestic Boss engine is pulling 440hp NA, however I notice all versions of the coyote used down under have a lower compression ratio (9.25:1 compared to the state side's 11:1) yet the reccomended fuel is 95 RON which I gather is about equivalent to 89-90 octane in the US since we use AKI

They are going down a bad road Guy - I'm telling you.

Not only will my stripper econobox be more fun to drive on a country backroad for me, but I can drive it every day, afford the fuel and the taxes and insurance, not be afraid to park it in front of WalMart, and I am also likely to do a few tunes and tweeks on it and hand someone their 550hp @ss on those same backroads too because I can pump the power and handling without adding much weight, but you are stuck with your heated seats, NAV/HUD crap, power motors for everything, 47.6 airbags, 127 lbs of sound deadener, and your microphones and speakers for your OnStar and Sync systems that you can't get rid of - and that crap don't make any car turn better - period.

If there was a new version of a Mustang or Camaro that resembles the old 91-93 Mustang LX - down to the option of "Radio Delete" mind you - I'd be at the bank getting a cashier's check for a purchase this afternoon. All I want is transportation to and from work, with occasional weekends of fun and frolic. I don't need/want all the "crap" in my car. 4 wheels, an engine, brakes, and a windshield, all wrapped in a stylish skin of metal will get me way down the happy-trail fellas. Good lord I'd LOVE to have the opportunity to buy a new LX 5.0 Coupe again today for $9k!
The problem is that it would not be $9K. And the volume would be so low that you'd pay extra for this (cf. Boxster Sypder).

Another problem is that much of this "crap" is mandated by legislation.

At least you can still buy a Mustang without Sync, HUD, Nav, heated seats, etc. Power windows are standard, but they are much lighter and cheaper than they were 40 years ago, and it's easier to give it to you for free than it is to have to build the car both ways. Besides, who, other than a tiny number of racers, wants a new car with crank windows, no A/C, no radio, etc?

http://www.automobilemag.com/reviews...der/index.html

A/C in a 1971 Cutlass added something like 130 pounds. The penalty in a 2010 Boxster is down to 29 pounds. For 29 pounds, give me A/C, so that I don't go deaf from having the window down!
For 5 pounds, I'll take a radio. Etc.
I'm with you on Sync, Nav, HUD, etc.

No one has ever taken up that challenge and posted anything.
The Lexus IS-F has 416hp and 371 lb-ft of torque -- a little less than the Camaro SS -- an 8 spd auto and weighs about 3810 pounds.
It's not much lighter....

I know it will never be $9k again... I was wishing I could go back in time to that day again.

Wife and I bought a Ranger Ext Cab 4x4 loaded one afternoon, and it just so-happened that the sales guy that met us on the lot had a teal green 91LX50 coupe sitting right - and I mean RIGHT - outside his cubicle. I read the window sticker while sitting there waiting for him to fill-out the papers for our Ranger. He commented that they would take $9k for the car if I wanted to buy "His and Hers" vehicles that night. I was SO CLOSE to ditching the $16k Ranger for the Mustang, but stuck with the Ranger since we needed a pick-up truck.

As for creature comforts, I have no issue with PWs and PDLs, but honestly - the rest of the crap in any of my cars is just wasted. Even the 93 LX that I drive daily has power side mirrors on it... the last time they were adjusted was when I bought the car 4 years ago and set them to suit me. So there's an 8-way switch, wires, and 4 electric motors that are riding on my car for 90K miles doing nothing but watching the scenery go by. No power seats, heaters, nav, hud, back-up sensors or cameras, auto-parking, no 99-color dash lights, no back talking chick in the dash, none of that crap - and I love this little car. It's perfect for my 10-minute drive to work - thank goodness I know the way there since I don't have NAV to guide me there, eh?

Just wishing for the good ol' days in the last post... back when life was simpler, cheaper, and easier to live every day.

Yeah, I see where you're coming from. Of the things you mention, I like power seats because I can adjust the height, and I like power mirrors in a rental car or if they've been moved.

But when I look at the choices a buyer had in 1970, that's when I get really jealous

Re: 2011 Falcon GT - just... wow.

Lots of cars have manual seats that can adjust the height.

I don't think the luxury options weigh nearly as much as all the pure metal and overengineering required to handle 500hp and still meet safety reqs. My car has nav and voice controls and heated seats and lots of speakers and lots of airbags and it even rides nicely on roadtrips and it's around 2800lbs with really flat cornering. It doesn't have power seats but they're very easily adjusted front/back and up/down, it also doesn't have 500hp but at around 230-240 lb/ft of torque it still moves pretty well and definitely keeps me happy. Sometimes I drive my camaro for the raw power feeling again but it just feels so heavy when I try to toss it in corners.
