2010 North American Car and Truck of the Year Contenders Announced

DETROIT — The so-called "long list" of candidates for the 2010 North American Car and Truck of the Year was revealed late Monday. It is noteworthy for its lack of Chrysler vehicles and its even division among automakers from Japan, Europe and the U.S. The list includes three Korean vehicles, including the Hyundai Genesis Coupe, the Kia Forte and the Kia Soul — and even includes an offering from Suzuki, the Kizashi.

The 37 vehicles on the slate include 12 offerings from Japan, 11 offerings from Europe, 11 offerings from the U.S. and three offerings from Korea.

The 2010 North American Car of the Year candidates are: the Audi S4, BMW Z4, BMW 335d, BMW 5 Series Gran Turismo, Buick LaCrosse, Cadillac CTS Sport Wagon, Chevrolet Camaro, Ford Fusion/Fusion Hybrid, Ford Mustang/GT500, Ford Taurus/Taurus SHO, Honda Insight, Hyundai Genesis Coupe, Kia Forte, Kia Soul, Lexus HS 250h, Lotus Evora, Mazda 3/Mazdaspeed 3, Mercedes E-Class, Nissan Cube, Nissan 370Z, Porsche Panamera, Subaru Legacy, Suzuki Kizashi, Toyota Prius and Volkswagen Golf/Golf TDI.

The 2010 North American Truck of the year candidates are: the Acura ZDX, BMW X5 xDrive35d, Cadillac SRX, Chevrolet Equinox, Ford Transit Connect, GMC Terrain, Honda Crosstour (name to be officially announced/confirmed later, the organizers of the event note), Land Rover LR4, Lincoln MKT, Subaru Outback, Toyota 4Runner and Volvo XC60.

Jurors drawn from the North American automotive media will continue to whittle down the list in advance of the announcement of the winners in January. To be eligible, a vehicle must be "all new" or "substantially changed" from the previous model. The 2009 Hyundai Genesis and the 2009 Ford F-150 were the most recent winners of the award.

Same here, but who would have thought it would ever be mentioned in that list?

I bet the fusion hybrid wins. Too much positive buzz for it not too.

Yeah, won't America look like gluttons for choosing a "gas-guzzling muscle car" (which is how many perceive it, no matter what the EPA ratings are) over a hybrid.

That irks me. Especially when people perceive a turbo 4’s to get better MPG then the V8. They usually do not.

For cars, the top would be Fusion Hybrid and Buick LaCrosse.

For trucks, Equinox.

What is this new Honda? I haven't heard anything about it or what it is replacing.

Any new car makes the list.

Its not replacing anything. Its a crossover built on the Accord chassis and made to compete with the Venza.

This will be interesting to watch. Thoughts:

I enjoy seeing that the Camaro made the list. It's very popular right now, although I think overall it won't make the final selection because of discontent surrounding the interior.

If the 2010/MKVI Golf/GTI wins I'll be floored. The MKVI is basically a sheetmetal improvement over the MKV with the same powertrain. On the upside, it got an even nicer interior (think Audi).

I think the Equinox has a great chance. The new styling is stunning compared to its predecessor which IMHO always looked very awkward/mini-van ish. It's dressed up just as nicely inside plus great fuel mileage and options.

To be honest I don't know much about the new Lacrosse, but I can tell it's a new coin for Buick.

Yaye for GM having cars that blip the radar again!

My guess is that Camaro at least makes the list of finalists. Too much buzz and hype to ignore. There are a lot of good new cars on that list though. Early favorite would be Fusion hybrid.

As for the trucks, I have no idea, but my gut feeling is that a non-US brand takes it here.

I thought the opposite...I think GM is a shoe-in for the TOTY. You read the review of the Equinox yet? Terrain & SRX will be great as well

Interesting vehicle. It is a taller Accord hatch. Not sure I like it.
