2010 Mazda 3

Is this basically the 2011 Euro Ford Focus that will be built in the US? Of is the next gen Focus on a different platform?

They've gone and done it, the new 2010 Mazda3 Sedan has debuted ahead of its formal unveil at the LA Auto Show and it looks like Mazda has gone and finally used a pinch of that Nagare design language. Those bellyachers complaining the US never gets good-looking compact cars will no longer have anything to complain about as the new Mazda3 is a looker by any standard.
Odd, my first thought was, what a goofy looking fugly little car. The focus looks waaaaaaaaaay better.

That front-end is way overwrought.
The current front-end is better.

And why is Mazda putting those exaggerated humps over the front wheel arches. I don't like that at all.

Wow.

Four years ago I saw a picture of the 3, liked it, went to drive one, and bought it. Today I look at this picture and I have no desire at all to ever try one out.

I agree. The front wheel arches looked bad enough on the RX8; now the disease is spreading.

The front of the 3 has some potential, but the smile is waayyy too big, and the single lamp headlights look odd.

NOOOO!

Memo to stupid automakers: just because Honda is doing it doesn't mean you should copy the ugly Civic dashboard.

So after reading the comments by Autoblog and Jalopnik, are we looking at the same car they are? Or is the media covering the LA show on collective crack found next to the Mazda 3?

Yes, it's smiling at you. It's funny, because when a human smiles at someone, that person is likely to automatically smile back. When I saw the car, I noticed I smiled--and not because I thought it was funny looking. The front end actually looks like it's smiling and has eerie human-smile resemblance!

...But in a really friendly sort of way...

I wonder if road rage isn't sometimes caused by the appearance of really aggressive looking vehicles? If we all drove smiling cars with soft, friendly features, I wonder what our roads would be like?
