2010 Lacrosse vs 20?? Regal

How does GM plan on differentiating the two assuming they're bringing them both out here in the US?

It appears that they both ride on the Epsilon II platform. Regal looks like it might be a tad smaller and w/ sportier styling and would definitely offer the 4-cyl whereas Lacrosse might not offer a 4-cyl and has a more subdued luxury look to it.

Regal is 8" shorter and would have a 4 cyl. option. Probably no AWD either.

BMW only has two platforms, 1/3 series and 5/7 series.

What does the 6 series ride on then?

Nissan cross platformed several vehicles on one platform not long ago as well.

Crossing platforms to many different vehicles isnt that bad if you design and optimize it properly. Luckily BMW is pretty good about it. I have confidence GM can do an acceptable job of it as well.

Surely there's more to differentiate than that?

You're right about the BMW thing (Though they do seem to define 'platform' differently than most)... good point there. I can think of quite a few other examples now that you mention it so I don't know what I was smoking.

Has GM officially said they would both be sold in the US?

BMW only has two platforms, 1/3 series and 5/7 series.
To complete this it is Mini cooper/clubman/colorado (upcoming), 1/3/X1/X3 and 5/6/7/X5/X6/PAS.

Other than size I'm sure there is a lot more under the sheet metal. You will probably be able to get the Regal with less options.

Nonetheless, I think it will happen. The Regal could essentially replace both the G6 and the Saturn Aura.

One step closer to GM killing pontiac and saturn.

Which I'd guess is the plan. I think GM would close Saturn yesterday if they could afford to. I have no problem with them dropping the Aura if they return Saturn back more to their original vision. Build the next gen Astra at Lordstown with the turbo 1.4 and offer a true base model with less content (but still good quality) at a lower price.

Pontiac will probably survive to offer entry level cars at BPG dealerships along with a couple sporty models (existing G8 and Solstice for as long as feasible, I'd guess).

Just in case you actually don't know (or if someone reading doesn't know), the 6 is on the 5/7 platform.

That really seems to apply only to bad news, they have perfected turning things off immediately.... not so much on getting things to market quickly.

I knew, I've just had wayyyyyy too much caffeine today.

And can I say how insane it is that BMW is making an SUV version of every model they have but 7 series?
