Ford’s Extreme Makeover, 2009 Mustang Revealed--The 2009 Mustang is in for a radical change and New Tech Spy’s got the scoop. The recent unveilings of the Camaro and Challenger concepts at the Detroit Auto Show has Ford scrambling to come up with a viable defense against the competition. GM is completely sold on the idea of retractable power hardtops, with the introduction of the Pontiac G6, and the success of the Cadillac XLR. GM knows that a power folding hardtop is the killer feature that would vault the Camaro ahead of the Mustang. Ford is taking no chances in their redesigned Mustang, and will include a retractable hardtop.
--Many executives at Ford wish they could have a do-over on the 2002 Thunderbird. The one piece removable top was a disaster and killed the Thunderbird right from the start. GM has raised the bar in sport coupes with the low end Pontiac G6 and Ford does not want to be in a Model T trap, where the rest of the auto world changes and Ford holds onto the past. Ford’s first test for the retractable hardtop will be the European Focus CC, shown at the 2006 Geneva Auto Show. If all goes well, look for the all new Mustang convertible in January of 2009.

I just hope they do something about the 4 inch wheel gap, cartoon tailights, fake gas cap and bubba gump bumpers. That stuff makes the car look even cheaper than the 78 Cobra II they modeled it after.

Sure looks like a Mustang II to me. And I wonder if all those currently wringing their hands about the 04+ GTO's trunk, will continue the chorus when such a Mustang loses half its trunk to roof hardware...

That would be pretty cool. I wonder if there is any merit to that claim at all? It would be extremely cool to see a 5th gen with a retractable hardtop. Especially if the Mustang will feature one.

Someone with a mediocre imagination & a fixation on power retractable roofs writes that an $70,000 XLR and the few G6s that have come with power roofs has Ford "execs" wishing they had a chance to put this roof on the Thunderbird back in 2002 which would have saved the car from extinction... which was caused by that one piece removable top?
GM knows that top would be a "killer feature" on the next Camaro?
If "all goes well" when the top is shown.......on a European Focus...in Geneva...(?).... then the top's going to end up on a 2009 Mustang??
And what about that drawing?
Circular file that article, along with it's Mustang II doodling.
The 2009 Mustang's getting a new interior, revised nose and tail, more powerful V8 (with an upgraded V6 sooner), and IRS in at least 1 model. Although Ford's tight with details, the basic planned changes are pretty easy to get.
BTW, Ford's plan to have special Mustangs annually began last year. The 2006 Pony package started it off. For 2007, there's the Shelby GT500 & GT500 convertible. Scheduled for 2008 is the new "Boss Mustang". Beyond that, engine based packages are still pretty tentative... especially with the "Hurricane V8" recently back from the dead.

I probably couldn't afford a convertible Z28 though... But a retractable hardtop would definitely make me want one.
