2008 Malibu: Bank Robber Commercial

I haven't seen a link to the commerical itself, but I did see for the first time on TV last night an ad for the 2008 Malibu.

They had a 1997-2003 gold Malibu as a getaway car in a bank robbery and something to the effect that it was a forgettable car (as police rushed into the bank, not noticing the car full of crooks getting away with the money). It then flashes to a side-shot of the 2008 'Bu, which is actually pretty hot looking.

Anyone else seen it? Congrats to GM for a creative and humorous commercial...

I did see it, and I liked it. There is also one where a woman is jogging and she runs right into a car parked on the road.

I have to mention, however, that in both spots I saw, they were actually using an Olds Cutlass (which was the twin of the Malibu). If you look at the front fascia and the wheels, you can see it is the Olds version.

I've seen it, and they are good commercials. I wonder why they used a GM car and not an import.

Hmm...I knew there was something askew with the split grille. I couldn't see the badge though...analog cable on a non hi-def TV The 1997+ Cutlass was definitely forgettable since there weren't many made.

GM can do that to one of their own....but if it were a Camry or Accord, my guess is that would be considered a pot shot and GM would have a lawsuit...Similar to Jack In the Box and the "Angus" commerical.

The badge was actually removed. I'm fairly sure they could have gotten away with using a debadged '97 Camry (or even a current one?) if they wanted.

Unfortunately, GM is a little too lawsuit-shy (of course, they've been burned hard in the past by dumbass jurors and scumbag lawyers). Witness the pulling of the Corvette dream commercial...

I wonder what owners of the older Malibus think of the shots being taken at their cars by the manufacturer? It's kind of an odd scenario. "Yes, our old products were inferior and forgettable. Thanks for buying one, dumbass. Now take a look at our new one, one we actually gave a second thought to."

In a second part she gets up and runs into it again

Actually, the badge is still on the car. And GM should be arrested for abuse of a corpse.

Both commercials are very funny and made me LOL. I like it that GM is poking fun at itself for producing boring cars and is doing something to attone for that sin. The new Malibu looks very nice. I hope Chevy sells a bunch of them.

The Bank Robbery commercial just ran as I am making this post.

Haven't you guys been watching the World Series? These commercials have been running every half hour or so throughout -- and they ran through the ALCS, too.

I don't have cable tv so I had to find these online.

The bank robbery commercial is hilarious. I busted out laughing when the cops ran by and the camera zoomed on the robber in the backseat. Priceless.

I wish I could find that cobalt commercial where it is pissing off the vette. That would be awesome.

Anyway, I found the commercials on Jalopnik...

The commercial doesn't imply anything about being inferior. It simply says the cars were "forgettable," which to me is more about the bland styling. Basically, the Malibu of that era (along with the Camry for certain) was an appliance. A '97 Camry is about as forgettable as it gets.

I still think they should have used a Camry in the ad, but this was the safer route, I guess.
