While a decent concept in theory, you'd have some issues. They mention "urban area". How many "urban areas" have high speed skyways over them? Using GPS anyone near or under the overpasses would get a false reading - unless the zone is just a big blotch over the city, in which case all those highways would drop in speed. I know they can solve that, but its one more thing thats a little annoying.

It says it doesnt automatically stop the car from speeding (in this form). This means you can still speed all you want, but you'd get some message telling you to slow down. If the nanny state tried to make it force you to slow down, I'd say thats a huge safety problem. But in all honesty i wouldnt expect this to go mainstream anyway, its quite expensive.

Also you need to have an active uplink with the satellites to update the information to when the speed limits on roads are changed, which is also expensive. This is a neat gadget, but i dont think it'll ever get "nannyfied" till all cars on public roads are on autopilot 24/7.

 

At first I would assume that insurance companies will offer 'discounts' for drivers who purchase new cars with this technology. After this technology becomes more common place these same insurance companies will begin to 'add' charges to those who drive cars that don't have it.
