3920lbs!! For the coupe. The blown 5.4 weighs 700lbs by itself. Tell me again why Ford just doesn't buy LSx motors from the General... http://blogs.edmunds.com/.ee90654

High twelves...with 485 hp?

I'd rather have a 450 hp, 3,500 lbs, Z/28....than a 485 hp, 2 ton, pig.

Same. That is one heavy car. Looks like it'll be right up there with the Challenger in terms of weight. Here's to hoping for a lighter Z28, even if it does have less horsepower.

Wow...a 3500lbs. car seems lite now a days. Ever the 3660lbs. GTO that was once called a pig is starting to look much better.

OHC engines are heavier than OHV engines. Make it out of iron and it's heavier still.

Superchargers (and turbos) add weight. The heaviest engine an f-body had wasn't Pontiac's 455, it was the turbo 301. Add intercoolers & that's even more. The blower, intercooler, and plumbing add 200 pounds in the '89 Thunderbird.

Then you are talking about components strong enough to handle the inevitible upgrades that Cobra owners are going to do, so everything on the car is likely able to handle up to 600 horsepower.

The Shelby GT500 weighs 400 pounds over the Mustang GT. Though thats a mere 130 pounds shy of a Crown Victoria ( ), you KNOW where it came from (mostly the engine), and you KNOW the components can take some serious abuse.

The LS* engines are lighter, but IF a high powered Camaro were to use a blower as well, the car's likely to pick up a couple hundred pounds. But I'd feel more comfortable tweeking the boost of an iron block than an alumunum one.

BTW: seems a issue I had with the Mustang is going to be adressed:
--There will be a "Premium Interior Trim Package" that will put soft-touch material on the dash, door panels and center console (yaay!!!)
And a clue on a change for 2007:
--Body was stiffened in the transmission tunnel, firewall and front and rear frame rails; all stiffening improvements done on GT500 will be applied to base and GT Mustangs starting with 2007 model line

Geez, makes the GTO look lightweight considering the extra interior room and IRS, huh?

The weight isn't surprising (in fact, I suspected the ragtop version might be heavier)....I think Ford may be a bit coy about the "high 12's" 1/4 mile estimate....hell with a good driver behind the wheel of my car it might hit a high 12.

That hp number is kind of low don't you think?

I think he was just giving that as an example....In that situation, I would agree I'd take the Z28 if those were the specs, but any extra HP from the factory would be a bonus!

Well, the 2003/2004 cobras weighed ~250lbs less.

This thing has a rating of 85hp more.

The GT500 IMO will be running mid/low 12s @ 111-116mph stock with a decent driver in decent conditions, IMO.

No different than a 3300lb vette with 400hp. Although, the GT500 will probably be underrated like the previous blown cobras, so I'll raise my estimate to as fast as high 11's and 117+mph trap speeds.

:-D

Yes, of course the ragtop is heavier still (coming in at 4,040 lbs). I agree they are sand-bagging a little on the 1/4 times. However, I was thinking that the 03-04 Cobra was a pretty heavy car (maybe within a 100-150lbs) and was good for low-mid 12's and this car has @100 more hp, so it should be somewhat faster, right? Then I went and checked the facts and the bloated 03-04 Cobra was still nearly 300 lbs lighter at 3665lbs. I think it will be a low 12 second car, but what will the handling/braking/fuel economy penalties be? I see it as taking two steps back to take one forward. :blah:

One last thought
SRT8 LX cars weigh 200lbs more and make less hp.

You can basically be guaranteed 116mph trap speeds in this GT500.
That's cool.

Good weather and 30.9X Baro for those East coast guys will probably net 118-119mph.
