Each tire manufacturer specifies the optimal wheel width for each tire. So the best route is to pick the tire you're planning on getting, and then look up the sizing from the vendor's specs. Tire Rack has a bunch of these. For example if you wanted the Michelin Pilot Sport, http://www.tirerack.com/tires/Spec.j...el=Pilot+Sport shows that a 245/45R17 tire is probably the right size for your wheel. 315 is out of the question.

to add to that, i believe the widest you could safely install on 8.5 rims is a 255 wide tire....anything wider pushes the sidewall out too far beyond the lip of the wheel....which in a way, works in reverse...i wouldn't recommend putting a tire skinnier than a 235 on an 8.5 wheel for the fact that the tread width is too shy for the sidewall then to meet with the wider lip of the wheel. selecting a tire in which the sidewall is basically vertical off the lip of the wheel is a good thing....sorry for the rant.

I run 255-40 17's in the front and 285-40 18's in the rear... sidewalls are pretty much straight and the only problem I've got is occasional rubbing in the rear, which I'm working on (with a combination of offset and inside fender work)
315's are too wide for 18" vette rims (285 is about as far as they'll go). In any event, you won't get 315's under there without a LOT of work. (unless you compromise the rear suspension by excessively limiting travel... I'm trying to stay with the origonal travel lengths)
